Instruction
1. Identify and define the term.
2. Type in the example and name the work and page from which it comes.
3. On a scale of 1 – 5 (with 1 = poorly used and 5 = well used), rate the example and explain your rationale for that ranking. For example, consider and discuss whether or not the use of that particular literary device enhanced the work, detracted from the work, or did not matter either way. Does the technique work for all readers/the universal reader, or does it rely upon a specific type of audience for understanding? Could you have substituted something different with increased effect? Explain fully.
1.Allegory: the saying of one thing and meaning another. Sometimes this trope works by an extended metaphor ('the ship of state foundered on the rocks of inflation, only to be salvaged by the tugs of monetarist policy'). More usually it is used of a story or fable that has a clear secondary meaning beneath its literal sense. Orwell's Animal Farm, for example, is assumed to have an allegorical sense. Page1
2.Foil: A character whose function is to emphasize the personality traits of some other character. Page 4
3.Form: The term is usually used in the analysis of poetry to refer to the structure of stanzas (such as ottava rima). It can also be used less technically of the general structural principles by which a work is organized, and is distinguished from its content. Page 4
4.Epic: A long narrative poem, on a grand scale, about the deeds of warriors and heroes. It incorporates myth, legend, folk tale, and history, and often relates to national significance. Page 3
