Essay #1,2,3,4,5 should be at least FOUR paragraphs. WITH CONCLUSION AND INTRO
1) After the Civil War, the (re)United States plunged into the difficult period of Reconstruction. First, describe the different visions of Abraham Lincoln and of “Radical Republicans” for rebuilding and reincorporating the ex-Confederacy back into the Union. Second, explain why Republicans’ program was defeated down South. Reference the Easley Letter in your response.
2) Capitalism developed alongside widening economic inequality and the class system. First, describe the colonial-era Atlantic System and its effects on colonial society. Second, explain how and why slavery created wealth inequality across the South. Third, discuss how labor changed during the Industrial Revolution and why this led to further class division. Finally, conclude by discussing how Alexander Hamilton’s vision for America’s economic development ultimately encouraged wealth inequality.
3) Imperialism has been a central fact of American history for centuries. First, describe how fifteenth- and sixteenth-century Europeans like Christopher Columbus viewed the indigenous peoples that they encountered in the Americas. Second, describe how eighteenth- and nineteenth-century White Americans like Andrew Jackson viewed the American Indians that they encountered in the U.S.’s western territories. Third, discuss “Manifest Destiny” and John O’Sullivan’s vision of America’s identity and role for the world. Finally, conclude by connecting “Manifest Destiny” to Puritans’ early plans of “A City Upon a Hill.”
4) Partisanship emerged just years into America’s Constitutional era and continued through the mutations of the various two-party systems in U.S. history. First, summarize the major disagreements between Federalists and Democrat-Republicans. Second, explain how and why the Republican Party emerged during the 1850s. Third, describe how the Republican Party further split between “Radicals” and “Stalwarts” during Reconstruction. Finally, conclude by discussing President George Washington’s beliefs vis-à-vis political “factions.”
5) Racism and white supremacy have been an unfortunate reality throughout U.S. history. First, explain how the idea of racial difference emerged in Virginia during the seventeenth century and how Virginian Thomas Jefferson elaborated on that differentiation vis-à-vis African Americans a century later. Second, discuss the treatment of African American slaves as illustrated by the words of Olaudah Equiano, William Byrd II, and Harriet Jacobs. Third, describe the treatment of freedmen during the era of Reconstruction. Finally, conclude by comparing the situations of Reconstruction-era freedmen like Joe Easley with the situations of slaves like Equiano and Jacobs.
