Image you are an advisor to the President on US foreign policy, when faced with the question what advice would you provide and why? Use chapter ideas to defend your position. You may also bring in outside resources as evidence. If using outside sources, please create a bibliography. The bibliography is not part of the two page minimum. Remember to use chapter ideas and theories to construct your argument while bringing in evidence to support your position. However, this is an opinion piece without any inclusion of chapter ideas to form your argument. By not applying chapter ideas, it does not allow me the ability to assess your learning and understanding of the material. I would suggest re-reading the general directions for the assignments. Re-read the multiple announcements around writing assignments and the purpose of them. For example, you make an argument that NATO isn’t worth the costs. You specifically state “No apparent benefits.” This does not demonstrate an understanding of chapter material. The chapter highlights the benefits of alliances and collective security. It discuses how alliances and collective security affect bargaining positions, concessions, and reversion points. You can make an argument that the benefits are not worth the cost, but you have to first engage with the chapter material.

  • Saying there are no benefits does not align with the chapter material.The chapter also discusses possible negative consequences of alliances regarding the above situations. You can argue those risks are not worth the cost of alliance but you have to engage with the chapter material. You state “no longer anything to defend against.” This doesn't demonstrate an understanding of chapter material. It's not applying chapter material to explain your position. The chapter clearly states the shifts in NATO objectives and the security threats they face. You can argue that those are not the original purpose of NATO, that the security threats mentioned can’t/shouldn't be addressed by NATO, ect… but when you state there is not been a shift in NATO, you are not engaging or applying chapter ideas. These are some examples but the theme persists throughout. read the Announcements that provide guidance on the assignments and how to approach political science and the chapter material.
