Instruction
Paper requirements – in detail
I. At the top of the paper write your PICOT question.
Population: Adult ED patients with suspected sepsis
Intervention: Quality Improvement Using Educational Intervention on Sepsis Algorithms
Comparison: previous sepsis compliance
Outcome: IMPROVED SPESIS COMPLIANCE
A. For each article provide:
a. A complete APA citation
b. Under the Heading “Summary” Outline the article. Include the following information.
1. Research design:
2. Research question:
3. Site of research:
4. Population:
a. inclusion criteria
b. exclusion criteria
5. What was the study plan?
a. was there an intervention? If yes, explain what was done
b. if now what did they do instead?
6. Measurement:
a. what was measured (which variables?)
b. how was it measured
1) names of research tools (surveys used)
2) validity and reliability of tools
3) how often did they measure the variables – one time, pre/post, etc
c. Data analysis methods to analyze results
1) if qualitative article, what qualitative method was used to analyze data?
2) if quantitative article - which statistic was used to explain which result? (Hint: SPSS is not a statistic)
d. Results of article data analysis
1) if qualitative – what themes were uncovered
2) if quantitative – were results significant, which ones? If not significant, what were the other findings in the results?
7. Discussion - What do the results mean according to the author?
B. Under the Heading “Appraisal”. Choose an article appraisal tool that is appropriate for the Research Method used in the article.
1. Write a paragraph that includes the following information:
a. What is the quality of the evidence? Summarize the findings from the article appraisal tool in 2-3 sentences (DO not put them in a table).
(Hint: “good quality” or “ not very good quality” are not appropriate answers, explain why you have arrived at that decision)
C. Under the Heading “Evidence”: Write a paragraph that includes the following information. This is a paragraph, not an outline or a Q&A.
1. How different is the research design from your planned design?
2. How different is the setting, and the population described in the article from your proposed project
a) will that change your ability to use information from this article? Why or why not?
3. How different is the intervention or research plan from your proposed plan?
4. How different is the measurement strategy from your proposed study?
5. Will you be able to use the same research tools? Why or why not?
6 Will you be able to use the same statistics? Why or why not?
7. Summarize how your answers above make your study different from the article study?
D. Under the Heading “Support”: Consider your answers from the previous questions, use that information to complete this section.
1. How will this article contribute to the development of your project? Provide at least 3 ways that this article will help you develop your project, include details that explain your assessment.
For example- it will provide background information for your project (provide details); you will be able use it as a model for your project (provide details); it describes potential barriers to implementing this study (provide details); or another way that it will help you develop the project (provide details).
PART TWO
Include the following sections: Research Design, Setting, Population, Study Plan, Instruments.
Write PICOT question at the top of the page
Population: Adult ED patients with suspected sepsis
Intervention: Quality Improvement Using Educational Intervention on Sepsis Algorithms
Comparison: previous sepsis compliance
Outcome: IMPROVED SPESIS COMPLIANCE
1. Methodology – this is the first paragraph. Briefly in 2-3 sentences describe the study design that you will be using. (hint: quantitative, and/or qualitative are NOT research designs – it is will be a quantitative study what type? If it is a qualitative study, what type?)
2. Setting: Briefly where will your Project take place. Will it be in a hospital, a clinic, the community, etc. Rural, urban, suburban? Describe the type of setting – i.e. public, private. How many patients are seen there and if in a hospital – what section of the hospital, etc. Anything else that will explain the context of the site. But ONLY the site.
3. Population: Who will be sampled for your Project? Identify age, sex, race, economic status. Disease status. Inclusion and exclusion criteria. How many people will you recruit for your study?
4. Interventions – if you are planning an intervention, explain it here. ONLY the intervention
If you are not doing an intervention, just write N/A
5. Study Plan
This is a step by step plan that explains everything that you will do in the study. Be sure to include:
a) recruit subjects (how will you do this?)
b) consent subjects (how will this be done?)
c) explain what will happen next? what will they do? Take a pretest, be counseled, take a new medication, do a new exercise. Or what will you do – review charts?
1) if there is an intervention planned, then very briefly discuss it here. Not in detail, explain how it will fit into the study. How often will they do it, for how long and how many times?
d) next what will you do? How will you record what you have done for this study –
if it is a chart review, who will pull the charts, where will you record the data?
If it was an intervention, what will you do next?
6. Outcomes/ sometimes this section is called “Instruments”. (every concept that you intend to measure should be included in your PICOT question or in one of your objectives for your project)
a) what will you measure and how? (what is the name of the tool/instrument/survey that you will use?); how often will you measure – pre/posttest, or only one assessment, etc?
b) how long will it take for a subject to complete the tool?
c) find the validity and reliability of the research tool; reference articles that have used this measurement with a population that is similar to yours.
In general, each section will be approximately 1-2 paragraphs. Except for the Study Plan which could be one page or longer depending on what you will have the subjects do.
