Instruction
You are a wellness and community health organizer in a community health care clinic serving a rural, underserved area with a variety of special populations (racially diverse, homeless youth, mentally ill, chronically ill, as well as the rest of the rural community). Your job is to help community members of all types to take advantage of the community wellness programs your clinic offers in regard to smoking cessation and alcohol abuse. Somehow, you just aren’t seeing the numbers of people show up for the clinic’s programs that you think should be there. You run across this quote from Chandler, in an episode of Friends (American television situation comedy): “Hey, you know, I have had it with you guys and your “cancer” and your “emphysema” and your “heart disease.” The bottom line is smoking is cool and you know it!” You realize that there is more to supporting the underserved than making services available. You decide to make a map of all the issues you need to consider in order to improve your outreach and ability to connect with those who need your services.
