Instruction
My Paper Review
Introduction (1-2 paragraphs) (10 points) /10
/1 Introduce topic for those unfamiliar to it. (2 points)
/1 Provide motivation for reading paper- make it somewhat exciting. Don’t need to oversell, but give a pitch. (2 points)
/1 Provide a brief argument why I am better off after reading this, why are the results useful? What types of clients might be willing to pay for this research? (2 points)
/1 What did you find? A 1-2 sentence summary of your results. (2 points)
/1 Provide your thesis in bold. A thesis is a singular sentence that defines your entire paper. It is one idea, your hypothesis. (2 points)
Literature Review (1-2 paragraphs) (5 points) /5
/1 What have I found about this topic? At least 3 sources from academic journals/papers. I cite them in APA format, or at least a standard, regular manner. There are no controversial unsupported assertions. (X does this) There’s a complete bibliography in back. (3 points, +1 point for each source, -1 point for each unsupported claim.)
/1 I summarize what’s going on in this literature. (1 point)
/1 I mention how I am doing something different. (1 point)
Data (1 –2 paragraphs) (10 points) /10
/1 What is the ultimate (reliable) source of my data? (1 point)
/1 how many observations are there? (1 point)
/1 Is your data time series, cross-section, or panel data? (1 point)
/1 What individuals are visible in my data set? What time periods does my data cover? Or both, if applicable? (1 point)
/1 What observations were deleted, destroyed or omitted, and why? (1 point)
/1 Are there any critical omissions from my data set, or unusual groups/individuals/patterns included? (1 point)
/1 An appropriate summary table is included and briefly discussed (any large means, small means, large SDs?). (4 points)
/1 Clearly articulate what each of the items in your estimation is. In particular, do some research for each item and identify if it is in percentages, if it is normalized in some way, and what a change in it of one unit means. (Ex: a point in football is not the same as a point in golf. Interpret)
Methodology (2+ paragraphs) (15 points) /15
/1 What did you regress? ( 4 points )
/1 Write the full regression equation model. Include any dummy variables or time trends used. Break it out in its own line like so:
Equation 1: SodaSalesGallons = B0 + B1 * OutsideTempCelsius + B2 * Yearly_Trend + error
/1 If my data is time series, did I create a time trend and use it? If my data is cross-sectional, did I use a dummy variable of some sort? (You must use at least one of these indicators).
/1 Did I transform my X variables when appropriate? (eg, log, polynomials?)
/1 Formally state your hypotheses for each coefficient of interest. (H0, HA…)
/1 Consider all of the Gauss-Markov conditions. Which of them are violated in your estimation process? There will be at least one. If you think none are violated, list all of them in complete detail. (7 points, 1 point each)
Results (3+ paragraphs) (25 points) /25
/1 An appropriate scatter plot of your results (labeled figure one) is included and discussed. Consider the Gauss-Markov conditions, you can often see violations here in this table. (
/1 An appropriate regression results table is included. (5 points)
What did you find in your regression results? How do your hypotheses tests turn out? (10 points, 2 points each.)
/1 Tell me the sign (+/-) and size of the estimated coefficients in your equation 1. Are they reasonable - do they Are they reasonable - do they match your hypotheses?
/1 Are they significantly different than 0 at a 1%, 5%, or 10% level? Is this reasonable?
/1 What is the estimated impact of another unit of X? Is that a lot or a little for your client? (4 points, one for each dependant variable)
X /1 Discuss R-squared. Was that reasonable?
/1 Is your thesis supported by the data? Is this reasonable? It does not matter if your thesis is supported or not. It does matter if you have properly determined the direction of your results, and if you believe/disbelieve your results when appropriate.
/1 Make a forecast near the mean with that data. Does it pass a sanity check?
Test (1-2 paragraphs) (10 points) /10
X /1 Identify a type of test that would be useful for your paper (Durbin-Watson test, F-test, VIF test, etc. Not a t-test or z-test though, you already are doing those above.)
X /1 Perform the test and show the results.
X /1 What is the null and alternative hypotheses for this test?
X /1 Interpret the results. What did they mean? What numbers were important in this test? Explain this as if I did not understand what the test is for or why it is performed.
Conclusion (1-2 paragraphs) (10 points) /10
/1 What did you find? Is your thesis supported by the data? Did it match your hypotheses? It does not matter if your thesis is supported or not. It does matter if you have properly determined the direction of your results, and if you believe/disbelieve your results when appropriate. (8 points)
/1 What could researchers do next to build on your results/what could you do better next time? (2 points)
