The United States is a multifaceted beast that lives a variety of lives. It has a political life, an economic life, a social life, a cultural life, a religious life, and so on. One class alone would never be able to properly examine these lives together, at most we can only dip our toe into each aspect. And one way to do this is to read the stories that emerged from this time period. These stories encapsulate the values, the customs, and the concerns of the day. Allowing us a glimpse of everyday American life - or at least showcasing the literature that our ancestors were reading and were influenced by. Additionally, reading these stories will help develop our own cultural literacy so that we'll gain a better understanding of this multifaceted beast and its multitude of intersecting and, sometimes, conflicting lives.
For this assignment select one of the following Short Stories, or Writings, to read.

Example how the story conveys this.
You're welcome to judge whether the story conveyed its theme or message effectively.
Judge whether the story is still relevant in today's world.

Is it a story that people today should read?
