InstructionYou will analyze a video of a live performance by a group or artist affiliated with a Latin American genre and write an ethnographically informed analysis of the video. The performance must be at least 30 minutes long and should be live (i.e. not in a studio), but may take place anywhere—a music festival, a religious ceremony, a street festival, or anywhere else that you find compelling to write about. In addition to discussing musical elements, you will have the opportunity to reflect on other elements of the show as well, including audience-performer interaction, the physical space in which the concert was performed, and the visual qualities of the musicians’ self-presentation. The paper should begin with an overview of the performance (basic information, including musicians present, venue, genre(s) performed, etc.) and then engage the reader in an extended discussion of the experience of viewing and hearing the whole environment of the performance, both onstage and offstage. While you are welcome to devote up to a paragraph or two to background information on the genre in question, the majority of the paper should feature your thoughts, analyses, and responses to the show. Below I will provide the syllabus with the genres to choose from throughout the schedule.
