ESSAY (25%)
Select one of the following themes of Western Civilization. Address the topic in at least 750 words (approximately 3 pp.). Essays should incorporate material covered in the assigned textbook (any other source requires approval from the teacher), and follow APA presentation and referencing standards. (See Template on Lea.)
Topics
1. Identify the main contributions of the Scientific Revolution to Western Civilization in the fields of astronomy and methodology:
" How did important discoveries alter Western conceptions of the universe?
" What was the scientific method, and how did it contribute to such discoveries?
OR
2. Explain the main causes of the French Revolution, and describe its progression until the reign of Terror:
" What social, economic and political factors led to the French Revolution?
" How did the Revolution go from popular revolts to Terror?
OR
3. Explain the main changes brought about by the Industrial Revolution in the fields of industry and society:
" What technological innovations were key to the Industrial Revolution?
" What were the impacts of the Industrial Revolution on the population?
Structure
Title Page (See APA Presentation/Referencing Template on Lea.)
- Title of the essay (Provide your own title (both informative and engaging).)
- Name of the assignment (i. e. Essay)
- Student information (name, number)
- Course information (name of the college, title of the course, name of the teacher)
- Due date
Introduction (75 words)
- Engaging statement(s) (What is an interesting/surprising fact about this topic?)
- Presentation of the theme to be covered (What is the topic of the essay?)
- Outline of the structure of the argument (What are the main points?)
Body (600 words)
- Divide the body into 2-5 paragraphs
- Each paragraph is meant to develop one of the points outlined in the introduction (i.e. explain discoveries, innovations, factors, impacts, etc.)
- Each paragraph should have an in-text reference indicating where, in the textbook, the information can be found
Conclusion (75 words)
- Short summary of the body
- Additional aspects/factors/impacts of this topic, or hints at its spread/next phase(s)/ending
List of References (See section below.)
Citations
When using material found in the textbook, you may either explain the content in you own words, or quote the text word for word. In both cases, a citation is necessary; failing to do so amounts to plagiarism. References should follow the APA format and should be inserted into the text between parentheses. (See APA Presentation/Referencing Template on Lea.) For example:
The Early Middle Ages were a period of great instability within Western Europe. These troubled times were in part due to foreign invasions led by the Vikings, whose "raids were driven by the desire for profit through plunder" (Coffin & Stacey, 2009, p. 199). Viking attacks were responsible for the destruction of much of the accomplishments of Charlemagne's renaissance (Coffin & Stacey, 2009, pp. 212-13).
At the end of the paper, a complete reference should be provided. For example:

The use of Wed sources is prohibited. Any printed source other than the assigned textbook must receive the teacher's approval. The use of unauthorized sources will incur a 10% penalty.
Papers without references or not presented in the required format will be returned for resubmission. Resubmissions are considered late.
