i hope your quiz went well. i'm getting started on this one now.

i didn't mean that to be presumptuous--you can take someone else's offer if you want to. i just meant that i'm starting it so that if you do give it to me, i'll be done with it sooner.

The quiz went very well for me. Those extra problems helped! I missed a few but nothing that can't be fixed with a little more practice. I am quiet happy with assigning the work to you.

i posted the solutions. i typed up the first few but it was taking a lot longer than writing it would, so in the interest of getting it to you sooner rather than later i did the rest by hand. If you want me to type up the part that isn't typed, let me know. And of course, if you have any questions or need clarification on anything, you can post it here and i will get back to you.

i'm going to be offline till this evening--probably 8 or 9 pm your time. But i will check here to see if you have any questions or issues when i get back.

Thank you, it looks good!. As long as I can read it (which I can), writing it out by hand is just fine. I do have one question on the work. For question 15 what are the names of the limit laws used? If my question does not make sense to you don't worry about it I will review the text book as I go over the answer again. Thanks again!

For the problem in #15 there is not a name i am aware of for the procedure. Perhaps your book calls it something, but if it has a name, i don't know it. That's just always what you try first with limits--put the value in and see what happens. Of course, for most problems this won't work out nicely, because it's a pretty trivial type of problem if all you have to do is plug the number in to get your answer. However, if it does work out, you're done. And even if it doesn't, you need to know that before trying anything else. For example, if you have the expression (x^2 - 9)/(x -3) as x --> 4, since you don't have any problems with zeros, you can just plug in 4 to get (16 - 9)/(4 - 3) = 7/1 = 7. But for the same expression as x --> 3, you'd get 0/0, which does not mean anything we can make sense of, and that's when you'd have to try something else. (In this case, factoring.) By the way, i didn't see any problems like this in the set, but if you get something like 2/0 when you plug the numbers in--or really, anything other than 0 on the top with a 0 on the bottom--that is something that you CAN derive meaning from. The answer will either be an infinity of some kind (positive or negative), or else the limit will not exist, depending on what is happening with that 0 on the bottom. Maybe those problems will be in a later part of the chapter...but if you encounter them and have questions, even if you don't have another set to post, i'll check here and try to answer for you.

If it's helpful, here is a fairly concise summary of basic techniques for algebraically evaluating limits: http://www.mathsisfun.com/calculus/limits-evaluating.html
