Discussion: Comparing Descriptive Statistics
Having a large amount of data is often beneficial in terms of generalization (extending results from a sample to the corresponding population), but in its raw form, it is very difficult to draw conclusions from. Descriptive statistics provide summaries of the data, and help us make initial inferences that are as accurate as possible. They also form the building blocks for the analyses used to test hypotheses and answer research questions.
Measures of Central Tendency and Variability
For this discussion, you will look at each type of descriptive statistic, and reflect on their advantages and disadvantages. Develop a main response, in which you address the following:
Identify which descriptive statistic is the most informative and the most useful.
Explain why you selected it, highlighting its advantages over the others.
Create an example to support your choice and illustrate your points.
2. Under optimal conditions, DNA structure is stable to the extent that it can be isolated from prehistoric animals. What structural characteristics of RNA & proteins (compared to DNA) have left them unable to serve as the genetic storage unit of cells?
3. What is one physiological process or bodily region that is highly sensitive to pH fluctuations? What everyday changes can be made to influence the pH of this process or region? Ex: stomach or mouth
4. A student is carrying out a biological preparation that requires 1 M NaCl to maintain an ionic strength of 1.0. The student chooses to use 1.0 M ammonium sulfate instead. Why is this a serious error?
5.Probability
Probability is a concept that relates to everyday life, as well as to statistics. In everyday life, we use probability to evaluate choices, make decisions, and interpret outcomes. In statistics, probability is used in similar ways.
Finding Probability
For this discussion, begin by reflecting on your daily routines. Identify a recent situation in which you have used or applied probability to help you make a decision or evaluate something. Then develop a main response in which you address the following:
Summarize the situation that involved probability.
Explain how probability was relevant.
Discuss how you applied probability.
Evaluate the extent to which probability helped the overall situation.
