Part 2: A tracheostomy is responsible in airways passage for critically ill patient. It occurs once airway obstruction is determined and patient can’t inhale or exhale on their own and is usually mechanically ventilated. It is usually seen with individual with long term complications and it can be temporary or permanent. With a tracheotomy tube you are also at high risk of complications. Complications include bleeding, scarring or narrowing of the anatomy and most commonly infection. Proper care is mandatory and should be a task completed several times during the day. In some scenarios, patient may have to be re-intubated for complications which may delayed the length of stay in the hospital. One common goal for all medical professional is to be sure that the patient is stable and can function without the use of the mechanical ventilator. Trials are implemented of weaning to ensure that the patient maintain adequate gas exchange and cardiovascular stability. After decannulation, other adverse effect can arise such as difficulty swallowing, talking, and coughing. AARC Clinical Practice Guideline: Management of Adult Patients with Tracheostomy in the Acute Care Setting can inform one, with abundant amount evidences with explanation to support with an extent amount of resources globally. Keep in mind, different hospital settings have different protocols/ structure to care for patient with tracheostomies.
