No other formats will be accepted. _________________________________________________________________________ In Unit 5 we are studying three types of learning: classical conditioning, operant conditioning, and observational learning. The purpose of this assignment is to help you relate these concepts to your own experiences. How was your behavior influenced by these types of learning? In other words, how have you learned to be the person you are today? Assignment guidelines 1. For CLASSICAL CONDITIONING, OPERANT CONDITIONING, and OBSERVATIONAL LEARNING copy, out of Unit 5, the exact definition of each. Enclose the definitions of all three in quotation marks "....". After each definition, enclosed in parentheses, you should indicate in which Waymaker section you found it. For instance: (Classical Conditioning). Only the Waymaker definitions will earn credit. o (3 definitions x 4 points = 12 points) 2. Give examples from your own learning which illustrate classical conditioning, operant conditioning, and observational learning. You will have one classical conditioning example and one observational learning example. However, you will have two operant conditioning examples. One reinforcement example, either positive reinforcement or negative reinforcement, and one punishment example, either positive punishment or negative punishment. One reinforcement and one punishment, not all four. Do not use extinction as an example. Do not use the examples below, from the textbook, or how you used learning to teach someone else. How did YOU learn? Not your dog. . .not your niece. . .you. o (4 examples x 6 points = 24 points) 3. For the examples you write, include the following. Each analysis has four parts. • For your classical conditioning example, identify the UNCONDITIONED STIMULUS, UNCONDITIONED RESPONSE, CONDITIONED STIMULUS, and CONDITIONED RESPONSE. o (4x4points=16points) • For each of the two types of operant conditioning, identify the STIMULUS (reinforcement or punishment) which strengthened or weakened your behavior, the RESPONSE (i.e., your behavior that was increased or decreased), and state the TYPE OF REINFORCEMENT: whether positive reinforcement, negative reinforcement, positive punishment, or negative punishment was used. Finally, clearly EXPLAIN WHY your example is positive reinforcement, negative reinforcement, positive punishment, or negative punishment. o (4 x 4 points for reinforcement and 4 x 4 points for punishment = 32 points) • For observational learning, clearly identify the MODEL you paid attention to, the BEHAVIOR reproduced by you, HOW MUCH TIME PASSED (seconds, minutes, days, or years) between first observing the behavior and then reproducing it, and the MOTIVATION that caused you to perform the behavior. o (4x4points=16points) Grammar and Spelling Correct all spelling and grammar errors before you submit your file or you will lose points. Deductions ranging from 5 to 30 points will be taken for excessive grammar and spelling errors. In extreme cases, a paper will be returned, ungraded, for editing, subject to a late penalty. At a minimum, use the grammar-checker built into Microsoft Word. Better yet, use the (?)HELP link at the bottom left of your screen to send a first draft to the Psychology tutors at UpSwing, the HCC online tutoring service. (You do not need to send a copy to the English Dept. tutor. That will be done by the Psychology Dept. tutor automatically.) Do not copy or paraphrase any of these. Your examples must be original. However, this is a good style of answering. Another good style is to answer based on the instructions (all 3 definitions, all 4 examples, and all 4 analyses.) Nevertheless, you are free to write in any style as long as all the correct information is there for me to read. Classical conditioning is defined in the text as “abc def ghi” (Waymaker section) When I was in Army basic training, we put on our gas masks and were put into a room filled with tear gas. We were then ordered to remove our gas masks. This caused a natural coughing and gagging reflex. For many years after, if I was watching the TV news and I saw tear gas being used on a crowd of people, I would feel a tightening in my throat and might start to cough. Coughing when seeing tear gas on TV was a conditioned, learned, reflex. Unconditioned Stimulus is breathing tear gas in my throat and lungs. Unconditioned Response is coughing. Conditioned Stimulus is seeing clouds of tear gas on TV. Conditioned Response is coughing. Operant conditioning is defined in the text as “lmn opq rst” (Waymaker section) In high school, we were required to do flip turns during swimming team practice. To make sure we did flip turns the assistant coach would stand at the end of the pool holding a kickboard. If I came to the wall and did an open turn, he would hit me in the head with the kickboard. The stimulus was being hit in the head with the kickboard. The response that was strengthened was to do a flip turn. This is an example of negative reinforcement because to take away or avoid being hit in the head, I did a flip turn. The behavior, the number of flip turns I did during swim practice, increased. When I was about 10 years old, my parents stopped the car in front of a convenience store, gave me some money and asked me to buy them a pack of cigarettes (It was not illegal to sell cigarettes to a minor at that time!) After buying the cigarettes, I used the change to buy myself some comic books. When I got back in the car, and my parents discovered what I had done, the comic books were taken away from me and I was not allowed to read them until the cost had been deducted from my allowance, about two months later. The stimulus was the taking away of the comic books. The response that was weakened was using my parents’ money without asking permission. This is an example of negative punishment because to take away my ability to read those comic books, the behavior, using money that was not mine, was made less likely to occur. I never did that again. Observational learning is defined in the text as “uvw xyz” (Waymaker section) Prior to joining the Southwest Memorial Hermann Wellness Center (now known as the HBU Bradshaw Fitness Center) I had never used weight machines that recorded my workouts in a computer file. A personal trainer showed me all of the weight machines and demonstrated how to adjust them. The model was the personal trainer. The behavior was adjusting the machines. Two days later, when I returned to the Center, I adjusted the machines myself. I was motivated by the desire to gain strength and lose weight.
