Hurricane Preparedness Project1. Go to the US Red Cross website at http://www.redcross.org/get-help/how-to-prepare-for-emergencies/types-of-emergencies 2. Choose Hurricane, Flood, Tornado, and pandemic. 3. Read through the information on the above disasters .4. Write an emergency plan for your family- or yourself if you are single. 5. Create an emergency kit or “bug out bag” for yourself and your family. Refer to the information on the website for needed items. You need to plan on surviving for 72 hours on our own. 6. Review your homeowners or renters insurance. What do they cover in the event of a disaster? What is your deductible? (hotel, food loss) 7. What will you do to protect irreplaceable items such as photos, documents, art, and jewelry? 8. Gather items needed in case of a shelter in place. How much water will you need for your family for 3 days? How much and what kind of food will you need? Remember you probably will not have electricity. What medications or other specialty supplies (baby, pet, hygiene) will you need? What about batteries and emergency radios? How much cash will you need to have on hand? Remember that banks will probably be closed or you may need cash if you need to evacuate quickly. In the event of pandemic or wide-spread outbreak many people will not be able to work so supplies and food will be limited if available. Mail and delivery will be disrupted as well. You’ll most likely miss work. How much money do you need to cover a month’s expenses? If you must evacuate where will you go? Can you fit everything and everyone into your vehicles? What route would you take? Remember that you won’t be the only one evacuating the roads will be jammed and fuel will be in short supply. The airport most likely will not be open and will not do last-minute flights. 9. How will you care for frail/elderly family members? 10. What supplies would you need to make emergency repairs to your home in the event of damage? 11. How will you communicate? In most instances cell phones are not usable as the first responders have priority. Do you have a battery-operated radio? 12. Write up the above and take pictures of your progress: bug out bag, food storage, etc. 13. How would you respond to civil unrest?
