InstructionFor this Source Evaluation Essay, you will select one of the sources provided below and compose an essay aimed at evaluating the source’s accuracy, credibility, perspective and reliability. Which source you choose is up to you. All sources relate, in some way, to the Native American "princess" Pocahontas. Pocahontas is an important historical figure, one most of us have heard of in history classes, but her life and story have long been misrepresented and mythologized in historical accounts, literature and in contemporary pop culture. Here, you're being asked to use your source evaluation skills to determine whether or not your chosen source is one of those that misrepresents this important woman, or one that gives us a more accurate portrait of her life and impact on early Virginia. The introduction of this paper will be introducing the source: give the author, the title, and the context (where you found it, where it was originally published, who sponsored it, etc.) You will then go on to evaluate it on 2 levels: Trustworthiness. Using the information in our textbook as a guide, as well as the methods we’ve discussed in class, you will evaluate the source’s authenticity and reliability. Look at all information that you can find about the source to establish the author’s (or sponsor’s) credibility. Also consider the publication in which the source appears, and the timeliness of the source. Is the publication known for being popular or scholarly? Are there advertisements on or around the source? Is it recent? How does the date of publication impact the reliability of the source? How does the rhetorical situation (audience, purpose, genre, media, and stance) of the source impact its reliability? What about the author’s (or organization’s) style of writing and/or speaking? How does the author make use of ethos, pathos and/or logos to make their points? What kind of references does the author provide? Do they appear to be basing their assertions on reliable sources of information? Usefulness. Using a combination of summary and analysis, examine the source on a critical level. Determine what the source’s purpose (thesis) is, and how it arrives at that goal. Examine its value to our class and the question of whether or not we can ever truly know Pocahontas. Include quotes from the source, where applicable. Include a conclusion which shows your final assessments on both counts. Utilize MLA in-text citations and include an MLA Works Cited page (which isn’t included in the final word/page count). You will need to do additional research to help you prove your claims about the source’s trustworthiness, so be sure to fully cite all sources used in helping you reach your conclusions. At least 2 sources will need to be present on your Works Cited page: the source you’re evaluating plus at least one other source you’ve consulted to prove its reliability (or lack thereof).
