InstructionDeath of a Salesman discusses the plight of the American worker who, as he/she nears retirement, may find they are let go, or his/her retirement savings has been squandered away. As you read Arthur Miller’s play, identify three (3) quotes from anywhere in the play which you believe not only speak to Willy’s situation, but speak to the state of workers in America today. With each quote you need to do five things: A) Discuss which theme (Abandonment, Betrayal, and The American Dream) is depicted. B) Discuss what is happening in the play when the quote is spoken. C) Find an article which examines the same theme and similar situation of your chosen quote. D) Provide a citation/reference where the article is found. (Include a link to the article) E) Compose a summary of the article, discuss its implications, and analyze how it relates to your chosen quote. ALSO For centuries, writers have used motifs to create depth or add insight to a character, plot, or setting in a piece (or pieces) of literature. A motif, then, is a recurring thematic element, such as a symbol, image, or phrase that can help develop and inform the text's major themes or issues. Arthur Miller, for example, uses motifs in Death of a Salesman to add depth and provide insight into each of the Loman characters. Identify the motif(s) for EACH Loman, explain its significance, and identify where it appears throughout the play.
