InstructionHEW 412 – Planning Project – College Student Health Program Lindner Spring 2021 Planning Project– College Student Health Program DUE MONDAY APRIL 5TH HEW 412 (Spring 2021) Overview The college years offer an opportunity for new experiences, personal freedom, and identity development; however, this period is also noted for the emergence of risky health behaviors that place college students at risk for health problems. This project will examine current health and wellness information and explore relevant health-related concerns and employ various methods to enhance one’s health knowledge as well as positive health behaviors to diminish risk, enhance longevity, and promote a healthy lifestyle. • During the spring 2021, HEW students will work individually or in groups to improve student health by creating one specifically designed health prevention course. This workshop and subsequent course will be directed at changing individual behaviors, along with college and community-level factors. -- This course you are developing will be available for the entire campus to enroll in -- • HEW 412 Students will be divided into 4-5 groups (no more than 5 per group) Part One: Group • Ten Health Topics 1) Stress Management 2) Alcohol and Drug use 3) Weight Management 4) Sexual behaviors 5) Healthy Relationships 6) Unintentional Injuries, Violence, and Injury Prevention 7) Tobacco Use 8) Access to Care 9) Mental Health 10) Environmental Health Part One: continued • Rank 10 health topics from 1-10, with 1 being the most important and 10 the least important • Your top five health topics will be incorporated into your health course. • For each of the top five items answer the following questions: ▪ Why did you choose this item in your top five? ▪ Do you think other college students would choose this item in their top five? Why? ▪ What would you want to know about this item? How would you want it taught? • Are there any additional health topics, ideas, concepts etc. that college students need to learn about and understand? • How should each course be taught? Hybrid, Lecture, Online, etc. Please explain. Part Two: Rationale, (50 pts.) DUE MONDAY APRIL 5TH Please complete the following assignment: Step One: Review existing college health data sets from the ACHA executive summary and any other data you may find that is relevant to your group topic. (Please include at least 5 data sources) Step Two: Based on the information found in step one, create a rationale that consists of the following items: (3 pages, 12 font, double spaced, APA format – Times New Roman, 1-inch margins, Reference page) 1) Why is an introductory health course needed at Buffalo State? 2) Why your five health topics (i.e. Stress Management, Sexual Behaviors, etc.) should be included in your introductory health course. 3) How college students will benefit from your your workshops/trainings? (HINT: I.e. Retention rates, academic performance, access to health care, high alcohol availability, illicit prescription drugs, poverty, risky sexual behaviors, low graduation rates, traumatic deaths – murder and suicide, drug arrests, etc.) 4) Provide an overview of what your course might look like and include some basic information • Course goal and purpose • Course topics and subtopics • Number of credits, how it will be taught (online, hybrid, in person), etc. 5) Conclusion paragraph requesting permission to develop course ❖ Anything less than the required number of pages will lose 5 points
