InstructionYour main task in this project is to effectively employ one of the conceptual/theoretical forms of analysis used by Snow in a 3-5 page essay, which are typically referred to as “principles” in the text, and develop it to effectively describe and explain significant substantive aspects of your chosen topic that are highlighted by the application of these forms. Simply put, then, you are indeed doing what Snow is in each chapter of the text – Employing conceptual/theoretical forms to analyze and explain significant substantive aspects of a specific issue that the forms will highlight. But you will choose your own issue to analyze, discuss, and explain in terms of an application of one of the specific conceptual/theoretical forms from the Snow text. Also, your issue must have, at least, rather good coverage in a major newspaper of record (The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Times [of London], etc.). You will need at least three (3) articles concerning your issue from one or more such newspapers of record; these must be cited in your text and the project must have a bibliography of all the sources you employ. Then, too, you will have to research your topic and become well informed about it. You must thus additionally have background sources – even newspapers of record will not provide sufficient background information – and all of your sources must either be scholarly (e.g., Wikipedia may not be used) or have a scholarly purpose (e.g., Wikipedia can be used if it helps you to demonstrate, say, how a concept, person, or event has been misrepresented). As many supporting scholarly sources as you think necessary may be employed, and these sources are, of course, to be cited in your text and/or your bibliography. Further, your citations for crediting sources and documentation in your bibliography must employ a formal, acceptable form of citation/documentation (e.g., that of the American Political Science Association). Some specific components that can be thought of as guidelines for the effective completion of this task can now be listed as follows (A-F). A.) Per the specified assignment, you will need to use three (3) current articles from newspapers of record (which does not preclude you from using other newspaper articles) about a current issue of international/global politics that is not one of the specific issues covered by your text. You will want to be sure the issue you have chosen has sufficient coverage in newspapers of record. B.) In one to two introductory paragraphs, you will describe the assignment’s task, using your conceptual/theoretical material and chosen issue. In this introduction you may want to feature some of the most striking features of your chosen issue; indeed, your research may yield information on your issue in terms of its historical background and/or its key substantive information (e.g., perhaps some key statistics and/or typical patterns associated with such phenomena are substantively relevant) that is useful to point out in your introduction because it attracts your reader’s interest and/or emphasizes the importance of your chosen issue. Additionally, to conclude your introduction you will likely want to describe the structure of your paper (e.g., First, we shall discuss [The Issue] shall be addressed in terms of its historical background, its most significant factors, and … . Second, we shall explain the [Key concepts, theoretical relationships, and/or legal terms.]. Next we shall turn to … .); Not only will this inform your reader’s expectations, but it will also serve, if your writing follows it, to facilitate the development and presentation of an organized and cohesive structure for your paper’s text. C.) The paper should have: 1.) A description and/or explanation of the background material for your chosen issue; 2.) A description and/or explanation of the conceptual/theoretical material borrowed from Snow and/or expanded on from your own research, and; 3.) An application of the conceptual/theoretical material in an analysis of significant aspects of your chosen issue. As we shall see, these components can be organized in different ways in your paper, but regardless of how this is done, the information in points one (1) and two (2) should entail that which is necessary to facilitate any reader’s understanding of the application to your chosen issue in point three (3). D.) Based on what you are learning in this course, including your research for this paper, the paper should display your ability to employ the appropriate/correct scholarly ideas, terms, concepts, and/or theory or theories where they can be used in your written text. And you must employ more scholarly resources in your research on your topic than simply news articles and your text. E.) You should have a concise, clear conclusion at the end of your paper that may include any judgements or normative suggestions you have generated from undertaking this task. F.) You must have citations of some form for your text and the project must have a bibliography of all the sources you use and employ, regardless of whether you cite them in the body of your text. The assignment shall be mainly evaluated in terms of the effectiveness of its content per the task discussed above and the manner in which it is written (i.e., grammar, organization, punctuation, clarity, etc.). And, keep in mind, problems involving citation(s) and/or the employment of limited sources are not minor and these problems can cost you a significant number of points.
