InstructionPart one instructions library assignment STEP 1. Topic- Examine the proportion of women in elected legislatures in the countries we are studying (ie US, Canada and UK) and compare them to other democracies. Then examine why women remain severely underrepresented, identify the factors that might explain it and discuss whether gender quotas offer the best solution to the problem. (See text p. 182and 183). STEP 2 Develop two thesis statements regarding the topic. This could be one or two sentences taking opposing position on the issue(s) raised in the topic. STEP 3 Find Scholarly sources related to the topic: required to submit an APA*** style formatted bibliography (in alphabetical order by last name of author) of at least EIGHT (8) items that are scholarly sources relevant to the topic. All of the sources must be scholarly i.e. books or articles (for more information on what constitute scholarly, academic sources see the attached table) TWO (2) of the eight items must have been published later than 2015. STEP 4. Write a half page, one paragraph summary of each of TWO (2) of the 8 sources stating: i) the author's main thesis or argument (be very specific) ii) the type of evidence used by the author to support their argument. BE VERY SPECIFIC (e.g. survey data, public opinion, electoral data from 20xx-20yy) historical case studies, court judgements, etc.) iii) how the author's thesis relates to your topic and your thesis. You should try to pick two articles that are on opposing sides i.e. they appear to support one thesis or the other. Part two Voters simulation • HOW your voter would vote in this election and WHY they would choose one party or candidate over another (you must assume your voter will be voting ) Take into account the short and long-terms factors which affect voting behaviour and the choices that voters make. Re- read the section of the text that deals with voting behaviour, in chapter 7 on election campaigns and voting choice. Study, as well, the funnel of short and long-term factors that affect voting. Then do some research and using your knowledge about the election campaign, the candidates, issues and voting behaviour provide a prediction of how your voter would vote taking into account their life situation, social background, regional factors, the positions of the parties, candidates and the key issues at stake in the election and how your voter would view or be influenced by them. In some cases you may find arguments that would suggest two possible choices for your voter, which is fine. The key is how well you analyze the voter’s choice based on our knowledge of research on voter behavior. • HOW the riding or state or county would vote. Based on your knowledge of broader factors shaping partisan preferences and the nature of your riding see if you can figure what the riding (UK or Canada) or state or county (US) results could have been ( in % terms for each party) and more important WHY you would have expected such an outcome. While the data are of course available sometimes the result is contrary to what might have been expected given past patterns. Try to suggest why the outcome upset (if it did) expectations based on past elections. You should begin by gathering information on the election, the campaign and candidates. Go to various sources reputable sources available on the internet. Some sources and links are suggested below. I have posted pdf book files which are a collection of articles about the UK and the Canadian elections on the course website. You may also check party websites for past party election promises/ platforms/ manifestos and other media. Additional information on the candidates and past elections in the riding can also be found for Canada at www.elections.ca and election websites in the UK. Wikipedia often has a history and profile of constituencies in Canada and the UK just put in the name of the constituency. You can also search by candidates names and get some additional media articles on their campaign. This assignment is to explain WHY you feel your voter would vote the way you claim they would based on the factors discussed in readings. Then comment more broadly on the expected results of the riding or the state in terms of what factors might have affected the outcome and WHY it turned out as it did . While there is no correct answer, the key issue is how well you have analyzed the basis of this voter's political choice. (You should include at a very minimum two short and two long-term factors) Write your analysis up in about 5 pages (12 point, times new roman font double spaced You do not need to cite all your sources just the urls will be fine. Include the name/number of your voter on the title page along with your last name and course section.
