Write an essay that critically engages with the question and addresses two of the assessment readings on the following page. This is not a research essay, you should not be doing any more research than suggested in these instructions. There is plenty to talk about in the readings for this assessment and more broadly in this subject. To help shape your answer in response to this question your answer should quote from, and critically engage with at least two of the articles included on the next page of this assessment workbook as well as other course materials that you feel are important to develop your ideas in a scholarly way. The essay question isn't so much concerned with your understanding of the details of the legal regulations regarding matters of public access to the in courtroom, but with what you think they say about questions more fundamental than that. After all, if university students struggle to understand the process to gain access, how can the general public? What does this mean for the democratic place of the justice system? Is trusting the courts to do their job properly and self-correct when errors occur sufficient to satisfy you? But perhaps more importantly, how does that feeling influence what you think about criminal justice's promises? How do you think participants to the process (e.g. defendants, victims, witnesses, judges, police and lawyers) feel? All of these questions and many more can be used as a springboard for your essay.
