InstructionStep 1: Look at the racial demographic data for the CSULA student body Fall 2020 (Student Enrollment (Links to an external site.)). Take note of: 1) the racial/ethnic categories used; 2) the percentages of students that identify in each category. This information includes all students (undergraduate & graduate). Step 2: Now, change the "Department" tab to your department/major (e.g., Art, English, etc.). If you are undeclared, select a department/major that interests you. Take note of: 1) the racial/ethnic categories used; 2) the percentages of students that identify in each category. Step 3: Repeat Steps 1 and 2 above, but now change the "Term and Year" (on the upper left) to Fall 2011. Take note of: 1) the racial/ethnic categories used; 2) the percentages of students that identify in each category. Step 4: Read some background information on CA Prop 209 (Prop 209 (Links to an external site.)) [please be sure to scroll down to "Ballot Summary"]. Read some background information on CA Prop 16 (which was just voted on this past November 2020) (Prop 16 (Links to an external site.)). Please read these pages carefully *and* critically. Step 5: You should have four sets of data (Fall 2020 all departments [1] and just your department [2] and Fall 2011 all departments [3] and just your department [4]). Remember, CA Prop 209 was passed in 1996 so all the data you are looking at (Fall 2011 and Fall 2020) represent a time when Prop 209 was in effect. How did the racial/ethnic makeup of the student body change (for all departments) between Fall 2011 to Fall 2020? How did the racial/ethnic makeup of the student body change (in your department) between Fall 2011 to Fall 2020? Is there any evidence to support racism in admissions at CSULA in Fall 2011 and Fall 2020? Why/why not? Did CA Prop 209 help or hurt minority students for Fall 2011 and Fall 2020 admission? Which groups of students do you think were helped or hurt? Or, did CA Prop 209 not have an impact? Based on the data you have from CSULA, do you think Prop 16 should have been passed? Why/why not? Would it have helped the students CSULA serves? Why/why not?
