Please focus on the history from about 1890 through the 1980s. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zimbabwe C) Please watch this documentary on Zimbabwe mbira music and related genres https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5hF2Hstvrfc In a short essay of three or four paragraphs discuss some of the following points 1) According to Thomas Mapfumo in the beginning of the documentary, what is the purpose of the mbira music? 2) Starting at 17:30, notice the repeating chorus, over which Thomas Mapfumo sings. That repetitive figure is known as an ostinato. What was the occasion for this song? 3) What are the purposes of the song at time marks 24:40-25:32? Describe the interaction of the different musical parts. Who is doing what? 4) At time mark 25:50-26:30 what is the purpose of the song. Describe the interaction of the different musical parts. Who is doing what? 5) Starting for about a minute at 26:44, discuss how the songs changed. 6) At 27:20 we hear a discussion of the different types of mbira. What purpose to the different instruments serve? 7) Describe the different musical phenomena going on from 27:50-29:30, including instruments, singers, and dancers. 8) Read the definition of Chimurenga: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chimurenga_music 9) From 37:30- watch Oliver Mtukudzi and his group perform Chimurenga.
