InstructionThe Mexican Hat Dance has been a staple of elementary curricula for many years because it combines a formal dance activity with a social studies – multicultural element and important rhythmic concepts that can be a part of a much larger thematic unit. It is a simple dance that each student can perform individually, with a partner, or as a class. Basic steps for the dance: Stand with your feet together and arms at your sides. Fold your left arm across your stomach and set your right elbow on your left hand so that your right hand is palm opened to the audience. Move your right hand in a flinging motion (back and forth) as you put your right heel out in front. Reverse step one, so that your right arm rests across the stomach with your left elbow on your right hand. Again, wave your left hand back and forth as your left heel goes out in front of you. Repeat. On count 4, clap twice very quickly. Repeat number 2 – 4 seven times. The music should change after you have completed these steps. At the music change, clap four times and then raise your arms up in the air, exclaiming "olé!" When the music restarts, repeat the steps, going faster each time. If you have many partners dance at once, all of the dancers can come together at the end to make a complete circle and sidestep in an agreed-upon direction until the music is over. Your assignment: Write a complete lesson plan that: Uses effective teaching strategies that will help to teach the dance. Integrates cultural elements into the plan
