InstructionSpeech 1315: Speech of Ceremony Parameters, Guidelines and Rationale Purpose: What is a Speech of Ceremony? Well, simply put, a speech of ceremony is aimed at celebrating a person or event with an audience. Thus, the speech should provide pertinent, cogent, and memorable information on the individual/event to extend their knowledge and understanding. Having said this, it is important to note that speeches of ceremony should always be highly professional and positive in nature (even if it is a wedding toast). Objectives: In addition to improving your ability to express yourself more effectively in your daily communication, as well as, enhance your ability to critically think and listen, one of the most important purposes of studying and practicing public speaking is to help you develop skills in voicing your ideas publicly to strengthen representative government. This assignment is meant to support the following Learning Outcomes: • Apply elements of audience analysis. • Demonstrate ethical speaking and listening skills. • Research, develop and deliver extemporaneous speeches with effective verbal and nonverbal techniques. • Demonstrate effective usage of technology when researching and presenting speeches. • Understand how culture, ethnicity, and gender influence communication. • Develop proficiency in presenting a variety of speeches as an individual or group (e.g. narrative, informative, or persuasive). • Demonstrate understanding of visual communication as it pertains to public speaking. Assignment: Why are we ending class with this speech? 1. At some point in your professional or personal life you should take the opportunity to engage in public speaking outside a classroom and this can be a fun way to practice. 2. We are always engaged in interpersonal communication: in our homes, at school, and in the workplace, this is a great chance for us all to discover, relate, help, persuade, and play. -It should be properly uploaded to YouTube, and its link along with its transcript in a WORD document should be put into the drop box for this assignment. -Your structure should include an attention getting INTRODUCTION, a multiple pointed BODY of information, and a CONCLUSION, hopefully memorable. Please begin with a hook and then introduce yourself and tell us what you are going to be speaking on (thesis and main points). -Your speech should be 2-6 minutes in length (points will be deducted for under and over times). -Your speech should have 4 outside sources regarding your person/event you are speaking on (quotations, references from fiction or nonfiction, web, or news print) quoted within the speech. -You should not read your speech. There is no “read” in public speaking. Reading does two things: it lends itself to a boring performance, and it creates a disconnect between you and your audience. Eye contact is key to advancing your message. Speak “to” us, not in front of us. -Your speech should be engaging. This is your time to shine, believe me, the more engaging you are the better reaction you will receive from your audience, it’s a cyclical process. -Please see the syllabus for details on how I want you to film yourself. Remember, you are representing yourself. Make sure you increase your ethos. Assessment: Your speech will be evaluated on the following four criteria: Message: Does the speaker develop a message choosing language that is appropriate based on the speaker’s goal? Support: Are your ideas developed in a way that is clear and understandable based on the speaker’s goal? Approach: Does the speaker apply an appropriate strategy to organize ideas persuasively? Nonverbal: Does the speaker utilize a variety of professional techniques (posture, tone, pace) to support goal? Other Orientation: Does the speaker show an understanding of audience and adapts message and content appropriately?
