InstructionWrite a two to three page essay (between 600-750 words) about your theme, introduce your participants, and provide a brief contextual overview of the group(s) to which your participants belong. Use the outline below as a guide. 1. Identify the theme that you want to explore: a) identity development (racial, ethnic, nationality) OR b) assimilation processes How is this theme described in the literature? Provide a summary using relevant citations from the attached material. Briefly critique what you’ve read about this theme. Do you agree or disagree with how the authors address this issue? Why? If you selected assimilation processes, multiple theories address what assimilation is and how it works. You will summarize their argument (providing citations), briefly critique the argument (do you agree or disagree with the authors? Why or why not?). 2. Determine who your two interview participants will be. What country/countries is/are their family from? Provide a brief (no more than one paragraph) description of the respondents. My two interview participants are members of the second generation. Both of their families are from the Dominican Republic. One interviewee goes to the Dominican Republic every year and has contact with their family there. They are fluent in English and Spanish. However, my other interviewee has never been outside of the U.S. They have no direct contact with their family in Dominican Republic. This interviewee speaks English fluently and has difficulty speaking and understanding Spanish. 3. Using data from either the Pew Research Center, Migration Policy Institute, or the US Census, what are some important characteristics about immigrants or members of the second generation from the country/countries from which your respondents families’ come? Consider how these contextual factors (e.g., reason for migration) might have affected your respondent’s experiences. I will attach the materials via PDF or provide the link below.
