InstructionThe British colonies were known to have treated native Americans harshly in comparison to some of the other people settling the Americas. While no party in the story of the creation of the colonies is free from any guilt I would like to start by pointing out some of the exploitative tactics used by these settlers. One of the main things sought after of course was land and many native tribes were even willing to share and offered small portions of land and welcomed the “people with white skin” as they were fascinated by them and some thought they possibly held a sort of religious authority. In fact they even had their own name for supreme being which is how some of the natives referred to the Dutch settlers that entered the land “They took every white man they saw for a Mannito, yet inferior and attendant to the supreme Mannito”1 Now going back to the British settlers in Massachusetts, the native Wampanoags leader Metacomet had a lot to say about the unfair treatment of his people. In a meeting of arbitration he brought up the point that there was an unfair judgement between his people and the english settlers, at times they would have disputes and when it came time to judge the perpetrator his native people were being judged unfairly while europeans would get away with their wrong doings. “If 20 of their honest Indians testified that a Englishman had dun them rong, it was as nothin;and is but one of their worst Indians testified against and Indian or their king, when it pleased the English it was sufficient”2 On top of this they had occupied most of their land and began to destroy their crops as well. These disputes would lead to a war between the English and Wampanoag. Perhaps one of the most hot button topics in both contemporary and historical American society is that of slavery. But there are a few misconceptions about how and why his came to be according to secondary sources. First I would like to start off by pointing out that up until slavery had reached the colonies the relationship between master and slave was very different in the native African lands of which many of the would be slaves would come from. It is a place that came to be known as Virginia where this would develop into the form of slavery that became common place in the years to follow. With a shortage of workers they turned to a system where people would work for years at a time bound to a contract that often did not specify how long or hard the servants had to work. While this was a controversial step it would only become more so when a sinister ideology came into fruition. The influx of new settlers in Virginia led to many people actually finishing their servitude and claiming land and weapons. This struck a chord of fear in many of the local European settlers who where beginning to think of themselves as better or more important than those of African decent both for cultural and more idiotic reasons such as racism. This push towards dehumanization and the people in the area realized that if they did this, it would create a society where exploitation and European dominance would thrive. One of the building blocks of the united states was tobacco so much so that it became used as a currency of its own because of how often it was traded and sold “Tobacco is the current Coyn of Mary-Land, and will sooner purchase commodities from the Merchant, then money.”3 Having learned of Tobacco from the natives the colonist had whipped up the perfect storm with a new cash crop and seemingly endless workforce Virginia had started a horrible new trend and soon other states began legalizing slavery and shipping in more people from Africa and stripping them of their freedom. It just goes to show all it takes is one bad apple I suppose.
