This is a true statement; I was living in France for many years and did not experience people breaking into cars because you left something inside. One day my wife and I went shopping and I had left my backpack on the backseat, my wife told me to put it in the trunk. I did not understand why but it seems like that is all they are talking about on the news, tourist are coming to San Francisco leaving their bags in their cars and people are smashing windows with some type of tool that takes little to no effort to break the window. We hear the police on the news all the time saying do not leave valuables in your car, place them in the trunk or if you have an SUV without tented windows leave your stuff at home. Nowadays with a lot of people buying home security systems that have cameras installed and signs out front like ADT or Ring, you would think that this would deter criminals from breaking into homes, cars, and stealing stuff off of someone’s porch but it does not. I have a ring doorbell on my home, one morning my wife asked me why she can not access our front door camera. So I walked outside and someone stole my doorbell, I looked at the video and at 3 am someone came to my house and stole my doorbell. I sent the video to the police and went out and bought another one, 2 weeks later the same guy came and stole my doorbell again so I once again sent the footage to the police and they could not recognize the guy’s race when I and everyone I showed the video to could tell it was a white guy. At my last workplace, we would take the cell phones from the kids at night because a lot of them were sending text messages to their friends when they were supposed to be sleeping, we would lock them up in a wall locker and that would keep kids from taking their phone or someone else’s phone. I guess this goes with that saying “out of sight, out of mind” when you do not see temptation or an easy chance to make a quick buck you do not pay attention to it. I would say that the theory that covers petty crime is the sociological positivism theory, the sociological positivism theory says that for individuals who grow up in an area where there are no jobs, education is low and poverty is high. The likelihood of someone committing a crime is higher than someone that grew up in a nice neighborhood. #2 100% agree with this statement as common sense tells us that crime would rise if the opportunities better presented themselves as criminal activity such as petty theft or burglary are not always premeditated but done by the opportunist criminal. Someone could potentially be walking up the street with no intention of theft but see a wallet on a table outside unattended and take the opportunity to take it. The National Insurance Crime Bureau provides statistics on the most-targeted vehicles throughout the nation in 2018 while situational-crime-prevention agents analyze these vehicles in order to find situational opportunities such as side window panel vulnerability in order to prevent opportunities for theft. (Adler, Mueller, & Laufer, 2021, ). This is definitely applicable to the workplace although it may vary in severity depending on your workplace. I work in a low barrier homeless shelter where theft is a very common occurrence in which we have to use a lot of situational awareness. Some workplaces may use less situational awareness such as scooping ice cream in an ice cream shoppe.
