What is the future of place-based public art? How can art help our communities heal, inspire, build trust and understanding? How can it empower and lift up the voices of minority communities? How can it tell stories that need to be told? How can art connect us and create critical conversations about the meaning of our neighborhoods, cities, and our country? Artists are a significant part of helping our community learn to reengage “our new normal.” From the COVID-19 pandemic to healing the deep impact of racism and inequality, I ask you to help shape our future. By exploring what “engagement” means— engaging with each other as neighbors and with art itself. Public art enhances public space when it is accessible to and representative of the community where it resides—and where it amplifies under-represented voices. The goal is to come up with a community-focused creative IDEA.

Instruction
The proposed site for this project is Payrow Plaza, the open space between Bethlehem City Hall and Bethlehem area public Library. Address: 10 E Church St Bethlehem, PA 18018 Visit the site, observe the space, the views, and research what this public space is used for, when was it built? What is the purpose of its specific design, see what you can find out. Students will be required to make a 5-7 minute presentation of their proposal to the class that includes a visual component as a Google Slide Presentation. A peer review will follow. There must be a written statement of 500 words that accompanies the presentation (to be submitted via canvas) You must be able to properly historicize the proposal as well as provide some theoretical accounting. Questions to be considered: a) how is the viewer is activated (or interpellated) b) how is the site is activated c) how is history and future time activated
