Instruction
For your response, select two texts (by different authors) and examine how they employ a common theme or strategy of resistance. There are many ways to approach this topic -- how do the texts you've chosen frame a relationship between the individual and the State or between individuals in relation to the State? How are we made aware of State power, and what strategies do authors use to exert other kinds of power in response? How is language employed to this end -- not just figurative language, but language as a subject of analysis? What audiences does a text seek to reach, and how is this related to questions of censorship or local/global politics?
Your response should be 5 well-developed paragraphs and should demonstrate how well you understand and can build from ideas covered in lectures and class discussions. This means you should be able to use the models introduced in class and show what you can add to the discussion. Do not try to cover everything in a text: identify a specific element that you can explore in detail in the space suggested. A strong response will be able to suggest specific connections or comparisons between the two texts you've chosen. Your response should only use your class notes, lecture materials I've posted and the primary texts you've chosen; no outside materials are allowed.
