Week One Essay on Recognizing Race (5%)
You will be asked to write an essay of around three pages, double-spaced, writing about the moment when you recognized race or on an especially important moment in your life when you recognized race. This essay will be graded using the Guidelines for Reflective Essays, found under Course Content, on the left menu of the classroom. The Week Two graded posting on the St. Louis World's Fair offers you the opportunity to research a very interesting event in 1904. The Anthropology Exhibits at that fair presented a state-of-the art exhibition of anthropology and race science of the day. Week Four: Midterm Take-Home Examination (30%)
The midterm examination will consist of short essay questions and one longer essay question. The tasks will be ones we have done repeatedly in class, and you will be requested to use all the materials of our course and your own reasoning to answer the questions. Materials on the test will come from our textbook, our course modules, and materials in the Discussions. Your essays on the exam will be graded using the Guidelines for Reflective Essays, found under Course Content, on the left menu of the classroom. The midterm examination will be posted by Week Two of the course. This assignment asks you to read a compelling play from 1908 and to analyze it with the help of a number of guiding questions. The complete assignment is found in the Detailed Course Schedule under Week Six.

The final examination will consist of essay questions and will test you on materials in this course, including the textbook, the materials for the Discussions, and the materials found in the Modules for the course. The final examination will be posted during Week Five of the course. At that time you will find a detailed and thorough description of the examination and the exam questions themselves, to provide you with additional time to work on them before the end of the course.
