Role of Federal Subsidies in Population Health: Focus on Obesity Chances are you know the phrase, “the right hand doesn’t know what the left hand is doing.” As you dig into the details of federal efforts to support certain groups with subsidies and to address food insecurity—as well as the federal role in setting nutritional guidelines and taking action on critical health issues like obesity and the myriad health problems that are associated with it—that phrase may come to mind. And it particularly may when considering the role of politics and how it can impinge on, or further complicate, finding solutions to an assortment of needs. This Discussion asks you to analyze obesity as a major public health issue in the United States and the impact of politics in addressing it. In the process, you will also dig into this issue on the local level and draw on knowledge of the healthcare environment in your own setting and among your patient population. Along with taking a national perspective, you will share and compare with peers your local challenges and solutions—an opportunity to demonstrate how capable hands in health care and leadership can work in concert to tackle big issues and improve health outcomes. Resources Be sure to review the Learning Resources before completing this activity. Click the weekly resources link to access the resources. WEEKLY RESOURCES To prepare: Begin by reviewing the Module 3 video introduction (Walden, 2024) with Dr. Catherine Garner, for perspective and advice. Review the Learning Resources on obesity and on the federal role in population health. Be sure to view the 8-minute video interview with U.S. Senator Cory Booker of New Jersey (PBS, 2022) in the Required Media section and prepare to analyze Senator Booker’s positions in your post. Review the issues to address in the Discussion and consider how you will respond. Search for additional resources on obesity, as needed, to prepare your post. Research local data on obesity to characterize this health issue locally and support recommendations you propose. By Day 3 Of Week 4 Post a response to the following: How do you respond to U.S. Senator Cory Booker’s comments about the role of federal subsidies and connections to unhealthy diets? Be specific and provide examples to support your point of view. How does the senator’s position relate to the readings this week on obesity and federal healthcare efforts? Be specific. How would you propose to address these issues that relate to obesity—and obesity as a health issue—nationally? Be specific. Based on local data, how critical is obesity as a health issue in your community? Be specific. How would you address the issues that relate to obesity and obesity as a health issue locally? Be specific. Read a sampling of your colleagues’ posts. Note: For this Discussion, you are required to complete your initial post before you will be able to view and respond to your colleagues' postings. Begin by clicking on the Reply button to complete your initial post. Remember, once you click on Post Reply, you cannot delete or edit your own posts and you cannot post anonymously. Please check your post carefully before clicking on Post Reply! By Day 6 of week 4 Respond to at least two classmates with questions, comments, or advice that expand on a classmate’s thinking. Or, disagree respectfully and provide another perspective. Cite resources to support your responses. Note: Your responses to classmates should be substantial (250 words minimum), supported with scholarly evidence from your research and/or the Learning Resources, and properly cited using APA Style. Personal anecdotes are acceptable as part of a meaningful response, but cannot stand alone as a response. Your responses should enrich the initial post by supporting and/or offering a fresh viewpoint, and be constructive, thereby enhancing the learning experience for all students. * Additionally, you must respond to your professor if they ask a question or comment on your post. Return to this Discussion in a few days to read the responses to your initial posting. Note what you have learned and/or any insights that you have gained because of your classmates’ comments.
