Most notably, users were unaware that they were participating in a psychological study, and they were not given meaningful opportunities to consent. This situation raises an important ethical question: are social media companies morally permitted to conduct psychological research on users without their direct knowledge? Although some argue that users provide tacit consent through terms of service agreements, this form of consent is insufficient. Because such practices violate individual autonomy, undermine trust, and fail to meet the standards of informed consent, social media companies are not morally permitted to conduct psychological research on users without their direct knowledge. From a Kantian perspective, Facebook’s actions are clearly unethical because they fail to respect individuals as autonomous agents. Kant’s moral philosophy emphasizes that human beings possess intrinsic value and must never be treated merely as tools for achieving some other purpose. As Kant states, “So act that you use humanity, whether in your own person or in the person of any other, always at the same time as an end, never merely as a means.”² This principle is directly violated in the Facebook experiment because users were unknowingly used as subjects for research without their informed consent. They were not given the opportunity to decide whether they wanted to participate, nor were they aware that their emotional experiences were being intentionally influenced. This lack of transparency strips individuals of their ability to make rational and autonomous decisions about their own lives. Even if the manipulation of content seems subtle, it still interferes with users’ mental states and experiences without their permission. Kant’s theory does not allow for exceptions based on beneficial outcomes; rather, it insists that actions must respect the dignity and autonomy of individuals at all times. By prioritizing data collection and research over user autonomy, Facebook treated its users as mere means to an end. Therefore, from a Kantian standpoint, the experiment is morally impermissible regardless of any positive results it may have produced. A utilitarian might attempt to defend Facebook’s actions by focusing on the consequences of the experiment. Utilitarianism evaluates the morality of actions based on whether they produce the greatest overall good. As one course reading explains, “The morally right action is the action that produces the most good.”³ From this perspective, the Facebook experiment could be justified if it led to valuable insights that improve user experiences or contribute to scientific knowledge about emotional behavior. For example, understanding how emotions spread online could potentially help reduce harmful content or improve mental health interventions. However, this justification ultimately fails when all consequences are taken into account. First, the experiment involved manipulating users’ emotions without their awareness, which could have caused psychological harm, even if it was not immediately obvious. Second, and more importantly, the long-term consequences of such actions are deeply problematic. When users discover that companies are secretly experimenting on them, it erodes trust in those platforms and in technology more broadly. This loss of trust can lead to anxiety, reduced engagement, and skepticism toward legitimate research. Additionally, utilitarianism itself is often criticized for allowing harm to individuals if it benefits the majority, which raises serious concerns about fairness and justice. Even if the experiment produced useful results, the harm to individual autonomy and the broader damage to public trust outweigh any potential benefits. Therefore, even from a utilitarian perspective, Facebook’s actions are not ethically justified. A common counterargument is that users have already consented to such practices by agreeing to the platform’s terms of service. According to this view, Facebook is not acting unethically because users have voluntarily accepted the conditions of using the platform, including data collection and algorithmic modification. However, this argument fails to recognize the difference between formal consent and genuine informed consent. Most users do not read or fully understand the lengthy and complex terms of service agreements they accept, and even if they do, the language is often vague and does not clearly explain the extent of possible experimentation. As a result, users are not truly aware that they might be subjected to psychological manipulation. Social contract theory helps clarify why this kind of consent is insufficient. According to this theory, moral rules are based on agreements that rational individuals would accept for mutual benefit. As one reading explains, “What is morally required is what we, as rational and self-interested agents, do or would agree upon.”⁴ This means that for an agreement to be morally valid, it must be something that individuals knowingly and rationally accept. In the case of Facebook’s experiment, users were not given enough information to make such a decision, so the supposed “agreement” is not meaningful. Furthermore, the lack of transparency in the experiment can be seen as a form of deception, which undermines the trust necessary for any social system to function. If companies are allowed to hide behind vague agreements to justify manipulation, then the concept of consent loses its meaning entirely. Therefore, the argument that terms of service provide moral justification for such experiments is unconvincing. In conclusion, social media companies are not morally permitted to conduct psychological experiments on users without their direct knowledge and informed consent. The Facebook experiment described in “The Social (Experiment) Network” demonstrates how easily ethical boundaries can be crossed when corporate interests are placed above individual rights. From a Kantian perspective, the experiment is clearly wrong because it treats individuals as mere means rather than as ends in themselves. From a utilitarian perspective, the long-term harms—particularly the erosion of trust—outweigh any potential benefits of the research. Finally, the argument that users consent through terms of service agreements fails because such consent is neither informed nor meaningful. As technology continues to evolve, it is essential that ethical principles guide how companies interact with users. Respect for autonomy, transparency, and genuine consent must remain central to any responsible use of data and experimentation. Without these safeguards, the pursuit of innovation risks undermining the very individuals it is meant to serve.
