InstructionAfter reflecting on the Self-Inventory Quiz results, I recognize that my current involvement in politics and healthcare policy is limited. However, I understand that policy decisions directly influence nursing practice, patient outcomes, and healthcare systems, which highlights an important opportunity for professional growth. One area I want to improve is becoming more intentionally engaged in healthcare policy discussions and advocacy efforts at both the organizational and professional levels. I also see value in strengthening my participation in shared governance structures to ensure nursing perspectives are represented in decision-making processes. The revised American Nurses Association’s Code of Ethics for Nurses, released in January 2025, emphasizes nurses’ role in advocacy and policy development, including efforts to promote social justice, eliminate health inequities, and influence legislation affecting patient care (Delgado, 2025). Additionally, my experience living in different countries with diverse healthcare systems has given me a broader perspective on how policy, access, and structure influence patient care outcomes. This exposure has helped me recognize that healthcare delivery is significantly shaped by political and policy decisions, and it has increased my interest in becoming more engaged in advocacy efforts within the U.S. healthcare system. To develop my advocacy level, I can become more involved in professional nursing organizations, attend policy-focused educational events, and participate in committees within my organization. These opportunities would help me gain knowledge, confidence, and practical experience in policy advocacy. The ANA recently launched the Nurse Action Society to help members engage with federal officials and advance public policy priorities, providing tools, resources, and exclusive opportunities to improve advocacy efforts (Williams, 2024). To encourage others to step out of their comfort zones, I would foster a culture where every nurse has a voice and feels empowered to participate in shared governance and organizational decision-making. By promoting open communication, mentoring colleagues, and recognizing staff contributions, nurse leaders can help nurses understand that their perspectives are valuable and can influence meaningful change. To effectively lead political advocacy and shared governance, I need to develop strong relationships with professional organizations, healthcare leaders, and community stakeholders who influence policy decisions. Nurse leaders play an important role in fostering professional governance by encouraging nurses to take ownership of their practice and actively participate in decision-making. Beyond establishing governance structures, leaders can intentionally promote behaviors that support professional responsibility, collaborative relationships, and shared decision-making, all of which contribute to effective professional governance (Clavelle & Tarasenko, 2024). Advocacy efforts are most effective when supported by evidence, so I must continue to use research, quality improvement data, and patient outcomes to inform policy recommendations. As my knowledge and confidence grow, I would also like to mentor and encourage other nurses to become involved in advocacy and shared governance, helping them recognize that their voices and experiences can contribute to meaningful improvements in healthcare policy and practice.
