Letter-Community Support Your assignment this week is to investigate how communities can support schools, particularly in the area of connecting students to resources in their communities. Your assignment is to respond the questions: what can educators do to help connect students to community resources and how can these resources help develop the skills and expectations we have for our students once they complete school? Review the assignment and select one of the four options listed. Once you have done your research (research articles, and web site exploration), your assignment is to write a letter that connects your students to the community. In your letter, take the position that you are a teacher who needs specific support from the community to help your students connect to their future. Explain the details of the program and why you need their help. Be specific about what your expectations are for the community (or state or national) leaders and what you hope the outcomes of your request will be. Make sure the program you describe is based on research. You may create a letter with attachments that explain your request in full rather than try to include the details in the body of the letter. Do not include references in your letter unless it helps clarify your program. Attached to your letter, include a separate annotated bibliography (information about annotated bibliographies is provided under “course resources”) that provides your EDU523 instructor with the references you used to create your program. Select one of the following four options: School Volunteer Drive You have been asked by your high school, middle school or elementary school principal to coordinate a community volunteer drive to recruit local residents to serve as volunteers in your school. Write a letter to help recruit potential volunteers. Name your school (real or imaginary), explain the importance of community involvement, describe specifically what you wish the volunteers to do, provide information to support your request and include other details to make your “case” compelling and professional. The letter and the program outlined should be original to you and original to this course. OR University Volunteer Drive You have been asked by your university president to coordinate a program to provide business mentors (either on line or face- to- face) for students studying in your institution’s Business Administration Degree Program. Write a letter to recruit potential business mentors. Name your (real or imaginary) institution of higher education, explain the importance of community involvement, describe specifically what you wish the volunteers to do, provide information to support your request and include other details to make your “case” compelling and professional. The letter and the program outlined should be original to you and original to this course. OR Governmental regulation and educational issues Provide as an attachment a recent news article regarding a controversial educational issue being considered by local, state or national government. Write an original professional persuasive letter to the editor of your local paper or a letter to your governmental representative expressing your written thoughts on this education issue. Support your stance with research. Explain how the path you suggest will help local schools or colleges and the local community. The letter and your suggested course of action should be original to you and original to this course. OR Community and Educational Partnerships Write a compelling professional letter to local businesses suggesting new and original ways that they can participate to help improve educational institutions in your community. Be specific in describing what you wish business to do and be precise in explaining for whom the suggested help is intended. Provide research data to support your ideas. The letter and the suggestions outlined should be original to you and original to this course.
