Instruction
Research Topic of Interest:
The barriers and struggles that first generation students experience in college.
The primary purpose of this research paper will be for you to conduct research through a literature review in order to find
out more about a problem related to any particular population, issue or trend. With the material and information collected
through a review of the literature, you will then be able to craft a hypothetical intervention such as a program, curriculum,
workshop or handbook to solve the problem. This type of project will be similar in structure to your final project, although
it will be much less involved due to the obvious time limitations and scope of this class. Consider an area of interest
within the field of counseling and/or education and develop the following:
Part I – Literature Review
Statement of the Problem: What is the problem or issue to address?
Ex: As a result of cultural barriers and stigma, seeking professional mental health counseling is often viewed negatively
among Asian American college students, leading to a high percentage of isolation, depression and suicide rates.
Literature Review:
This is the major research assignment for this course. Each student will identify an issue or problem facing individuals,
educational or mental health organizations, communities, and/or society more generally. Students will conduct a literature
review about their topic, identify and investigate themes, past and current practices, and then prepare a report that conveys
the material in an accessible and actionable way. It is important to remember that a literature review is a systematic
investigation of available credible resources (journal articles, books, online material, journalistic media, etc.) that is
organized in a coherent manner for presentation. This is quite different from a bibliography with descriptions. In addition
to finding out “what’s out there” about your chosen population or topic, you will have organized it by themes or
categories and synthesized the information found in each source into a coherent narrative presentation. You will be
introduced in more detail to the literature review during this course. Before you complete the EDCO program, you will be
expected to produce a substantial research paper that is usually organized into five chapters, the second of which is a
literature review. Hence, this assignment will help to prepare you for that (especially if you choose a topic in EDCO 215
that you can further develop for your thesis project) as well as conducting such research during your career. (SCPE 9.2)
Since grades are an obligation in our context (versus performance reviews and data reports in professional contexts), your
grade on this project will serve as feedback for the integrity of your work product relative to the following possible
categories:
• A smooth, consistent and clearly articulated flow and logic to the body of the paper, with well-crafted mechanics,
diction, grammar, spelling, etc.
• Diversity of viewpoints, contexts, and sources.
• Paper must utilize at least 12 recent (i.e., under 10-years old) academic/scholarly sources (ideally 15+), of which
at least eight are peer-reviewed journal articles; and others may be from academic books/book chapters. Older
sources may be used to provide conceptual, theoretical, contextual, and/or historical support.
• Research reports issued by government and Non-Government Organization (NGO) entities (e.g., research centers,
foundations, non-profit organizations) are welcome (in addition to the 12 required academic/scholarly sources).
• Up to two relevant blog or social media posts, newspaper articles, and other non peer-reviewed sources are
welcome.
• A demonstrably compelling analysis of the source materials (e.g., viewpoints, studies, conclusions, gaps,
consensus, points of debate) coupled with a fair-minded synthesis of what is known or argued about your topic.
• 12 or more pages
Part II - Intervention
Statement of Purpose: What is the proposed intervention (fix it)?
Ex: The purpose of this paper is to create a workshop focused on deconstructing cultural barriers and stigma of mental
health among the Asian American community. The workshop will offer specific techniques and training for depression
and suicide prevention, mental health resources to increase mental health literacy, and encompass peer mentorship
opportunities.
Intervention:
The Intervention effort for this paper is connected to and justified by your literature review. Please develop a hypothetical
intervention that will address the problem that you have identified. Please be creative. You have an unlimited
hypothetical budget. Also, briefly discuss how you would assess the effectiveness of your effort (e.g., pre/post-tests, etc.).
(3 or more pages)
Please use the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (7th edition) as your reference guide for
completing this paper. All papers must be typed, double-spaced, and follow APA style (including an abstract and the
above-mentioned sections) in order to receive full credit for the assignment.
