SUBDOMAIN 602.1 - INSTRUCTIONAL PLANNING & DESIGN
Competency 602.1.4: Learning Objectives - The graduate generates clear, relevant, measurable learning objectives to meet student needs and achieve program goals.
Objective 602.1.4-02: Develop learning objectives.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Given:
The terms standards, goals, and objectives are often used interchangeably without recognizing their different meanings. Standards are general expressions of our values and give us a sense of direction. Goals are usually derived from standards to direct more specifically what must be accomplished at a particular grade level. Objectives convey the specific behavior learners must attain, the conditions under which they must demonstrate the behavior, and the proficiency level at which they should perform the behavior (see Borich, 2006).
Task:
Choose a content area related to your program of study.
A. Identify one of your state’s standards (related to your content area) that could be aligned to three distinct instructional goals.
Note: To search for standards in TaskStream, from the TaskStream home page, select “Standards Manager†under “My Programs & Resources.†Then go to “Browse Standards†(Standards Wizard). Select your state. Then select the applicable standard(s).
B. Identify three of your state’s instructional goals (for a specific grade level and for your content area) that align to the state standard you selected.
Note: Specific terminology may differ from state to state. What one state refers to as an objective might actually fall under the goal category. One state might include only standards and not instructional goals or vice versa. If that is the case, you will need to construct the missing elements based on information provided. Refer to the definitions in the Given and use your best judgment to determine your state’s standards and goals.
C. For each of the three instructional goals, develop three original and measurable (e.g., measured through formal or informal assessments) learning objectives that are relevant to the goals.
D. For each instructional goal, write a brief justification for the objectives you have created (suggested length of 1 paragraph per instructional goal).
E. If you use sources, include all in-text citations and references in APA format.
