Instruction
For this assignment I want you to really take a close look at what you do with you life and how much of your time is spent "in family" vs. "out of family." I want you to keep an accurate accounting of the things you do over five days (any five days before the project is due, but try to include some weekend and weekdays). This project is designed for you to explore the patterns of interaction each of you have with your families and also how much time you spend at work and leisure.
Here is a breakdown of exactly what I want for this project:
1. Keep track of the things you do during the five days (does not have to be consecutive) by taking note of activities and the time spent doing them. You don't need to break it down to every little thing, think about using a few general categories like: "Work," "Friends," "Leisure," and "Family." As you are keeping track make note of the types of things you do in each category. So, for example, maybe you will jot down things like; "phone call to Mom-20 minutes" in the "Family" category, and "dinner out-60 minutes" in the "Friend" category. Stick with writing down minutes to keep it consistent throughout, you are going to have to add them up in the end. After the five days, when you add the minutes up, then you can convert to hours if you wish.
2. Enter your data into a spreadsheet program such as Excel and produce a pie chart showing the data you collected (alternatively, there are techniques for doing this in Word but Excel is much easier. You will find links to tutorials for doing this below the assignment). If you are using a completely different program like Apple's Numbers, you will have to search for a different tutorial.
3. Create and label your chart, save it.
4. Write a two page analysis of your results. Be thoughtful and analytical. What does this say about how you conduct your life? How do you think this compares to families 100 years ago? 200 years ago? This analysis should be self-directed meaning I am looking for you to connect this to course material and give it a good scientific review (my questions about "years ago" were examples not requirements).
5. Attach your chart with data table, any notes you typed in, and your analysis into a single Word document and submit it.
Make sure your full project report is organized and complete before you submit it through Blackboard.
