NOTE: It is STRONGLY recommended that you interview individuals with cultural differences in which you personally want or need further information. For example, if you want or need to gain more insight about the experiences of gay men or lesbian women, seek out gay or lesbian individuals or couples to better understand the experience from those who actually belong/identify with the culture. If you want or need to learn more about the experiences of young adult African American men, seek a volunteer who actually experiences the culture.
IMPORTANT: You are not counseling your volunteers but, instead, are seeking cultural information. Therefore, you will not be offering advice, suggestions, or opinions associated with your volunteers culture. You will need to explain to your volunteers that you are a student in universitys counseling program and that you want to gain more insight about diverse populations in order to provide effective counseling services to future clients. You will also need to inform your volunteers that you will be asking questions about his/her/their culture and that there is NO obligation on their part to discuss any areas that might be uncomfortable. Lastly, you will need to inform your volunteer that you will be writing up a summary of the interview, without using the volunteers real name, which will be read by the course professor and discussed in class among your class peers.
PuRPOSE: Begin the process of interacting with others from different cultural backgrounds to better understand the worldview and perspectives of a future diverse clientele.
