I have blogs board and I should comment for two so I posted two discussions and I need each comment for each 1-Only 16% of Silicon Valleys Airbnb global listing come from the U.S. This U.S. company has clearly become much less about the U.S. market and more about the international market. Airbnb had great results when they developed the strategy to expand to Europe making 3 billion in the European market alone. As a strategy Airbnb co founder stated that they planned to steal market share from the traditional vacation rental sites like Home Away, Expedia, and VRBO. The investment made in order to gain this market share paid off for the company as they have seen significant growth in Airbnb use across the market, particularly in foreign markets. Three of Airbnbs top five fastest growing cities Tokyo, Osaka, and Beijing are located in Asia. Osaka has seen the most growth at 542% while Tokyo has seen growth of 220% and Beijing has seen growth of 294%. In Europe, Paris has seen the most growth and has the most Airbnb listings of 71, 852. Though Airbnb has already seen significant growth in Asia, their current priority, as an international strategy is to continue to penetrate the Chinese market. It is interesting that Airbnb has made the choice to further penetrate Asia as opposed to Europe. I believe their reason for this has to do with external factors as this article mentions the acts of terrorism that have taken place in Europe. With this current concern for safety in Europe there is a high chance that there have been fewer people traveling to the country and therefore a decline in the need for Airbnb. This is an example of how international expansion can be risky and how external factors can threaten the growth that companies expect to have when they chose to expand internationally. Because Airbnb is now focusing on China they are expecting to reach a goal of 10 billion in revenues by 2020. Another external factor that has to be considered and can have great effects on the continued international expansion of Airbnb are the different regulations from country to country. For example in Berlin homeowners are unable to rent out their entire homes to tourist which is a measure that was taken in order to preserve affordable housing for those living in Berlin.
Airbnb has been successful with their international expansion but this success came with external trials that were beyond their control. International expansion is very beneficial to companies but there can be unforeseen risk that a company may not have addressed when developing their strategy, but will have to face along the way.2-The essence of an international strategy for most firms is to reduce their 0ver-reliance on their home market and seek to gain market share from the international markets. There is a great deal of competition for firms across the globe due mainly as a result of globalisation in business.
The article referenced in this blog talks about Samsung Electronics Company and its global operations. Samsung is a global player in the electronics industry and the company decided to pursue an international strategy for some crucial reasons to its operations. The companys strategic intent was to be a major global player offering premium brand in the global market. In order to achieve an effective international strategy, Samsung build layers of advantages. This means that the company must continue to expand its basis for competitive advantage. Some of the layers of advantages built by Samsung are low wage costs, developing global brands and efficiency in production. Secondly, Samsung searched for loose bricks by exploiting untapped market territories. The company had entered into joint ventures and licensing agreements with many of its competitors to combine competencies. For example, it had a joint venture with Sanyo of Japan to produce its first television sets and had a licensing agreement with Toshiba for microwave ovens. Business alliances with competitors present an avenue to compete effectively internationally.
Other approaches used by Samsung to pursue its international strategy are changing the terms of engagement by creating a space for itself within an existing space. A good instance of this was Samsung entering into the high definition television market before other competitors. Lastly, the use of collaboration is another avenue for pursuing its international strategy for Samsung. With its little technical know-how, the company entered into licensing agreements with foreign companies such as Toshiba and Philips. This gave it access to patented technologies which it used to develop and grow its business. The above is an example of how Samsung used effective international strategy in its global business.
