Instruction
Case Study: This is a personal case study. You are to reflect on your own
adolescence and apply course material to analyze, explain, describe, and understand that time in your life in a
way that shows Critical Thinking about adolescence. Critical thinking is defined as disciplined thinking that
is clear, rational, open-minded, and informed by evidence (Random House Dictionary, Random House, Inc.
2014).
What factors (as described in the text) were important in your development? What were not important? What
parts of your adolescence were typical (compared to research in the text on adolescents) and what parts were
unusual? What about your adolescence made you into you? Focus on the influences of factors such as
parents/family, schools/teachers/academics, religion/spirituality, sports/extra-curricular activities, volunteer
opportunities/employment, personality, gender, values, relationships, and the impact of peer influences. Show
that you have a more informed perspective of your adolescence than you did when you wrote Paper 1.
The paper must be a minimum of 4 full pages, typed, double-spaced, standard font, one-inch margins. Apply
specific text material such as concepts, theories, statistics & research findings rather than stating personal
opinions about what influenced your adolescence. Show that you understand what you are applying; do not
simply mention a concept or term from the text. Aim for about 1-2 text citations per every 2-3 paragraphs.
Give credit (i.e., cite the text, author and date) every time you take information from the text, for example: my
growing distance from my mother illustrates the concept of desatellization, as described in Santrock (2014).
Cite the text, author, date and page number when using a direct quote from the text; for example: Adolescence
is a time of strife and turmoil for many but can also be a time of growth and insight (Adolescence, Santrock,
2014, p. 41).
Graded on:
1. Information (accuracy, relevance, use of material from text);
2. Evidence of Critical Thinking; and
3. Writing (college-level, spelling, sentence structure, etc.). Be sure to proof your paper and/or meet with
Writing Center staff to review the assignment before submitting it to the instructor.
