***How can organizations develop a strong, ethical, corporate culture?
Corporate Culture
First is the topic of corporate culture and for anyone whos worked in an organization, I think you see that all this makes sense. I like the short hand description in the book written by Deal & Kennedy, named Corporate Cultures,
Corporate culture is simply how we do things around here.
Its a snap shot of how things happen in the business processes of the organization. Using a fictitious corporation, SYX Corp. many organizations say that this is the XYZ Corporations way. This is what XYZ is about. This is how XYZ does business. So thats essentially saying what its corporate culture is; what it thinks it is and what it thinks it wants to be.
Another description provided by Balkaran is the generally accepted definition of culture: It represents a system of shared values and beliefs that interact with people, organizational structure and systems to produce norms. This translates into what is important to a business? How things happen and the way things are done. Norms are expectations. They are kind of like standards. Youre supposed to do things this way. Organizations, due to corporate culture, have certain standards and ways of being with which people are expected to comply. Thats corporate culture.
One definition is a system of shared values of shared concepts of what is important and beliefs about how things work that interact with people. The structure and systems to produce norms. The way we do things around here. It can be the bond which links people in a shared purpose and direction. It covers prejudices, main values, and assumptions, unconsciously held and taken for granted. Culture covers a way of thinking, feeling and reacting. I think thats a good description of it. In every organization there seems to be a collection of beliefs, sometimes those beliefs are true and sometimes theyre not, but the organizational constituents hold them.
Sometimes we use the term tribal knowledge. Tribal knowledge connotes the idea,
Well, we all believe this.
Well do you know its true?
Well, of course its true. Weve always believed it.
Got any evidence for it, whats the basis of it?
Look, we dont get into discussion. This is part of the XYZ way.
Thats corporate culture. And it can have a profound influential on people because if someone acts outside the corporate culture, they may be ostracized from participation in the organization.
Hint: If the organization youre you are involved in has a corporate culture that tolerates illegality or other improper procedures, its going to have a profound influence on the success of the compliance department. We are going to see So corporate culture is a very important component of how the compliance department can operate in an organization, the challenges it faces and the things it must do.
