Differences between leadership, position and power
Leadership is the ability to lead either any group of people or any organization. An effective leader is one who has an inspiring vision and is able to build something new all the time. Leadership does not imply autocratic behavior or monopoly over others. Leadership could mean different things to different people. The dominant characteristics of leadership are devising a map of the future career path, bringing in change and taking everyone along in the path to progress. (Gardner, 1993).
On the contrary position refers to a particular position, or a place where something has been put. It can be said to be way of arranging or putting things. This is very different from leadership; leadership is a characteristic a trait of individuals. Position is the arrangement of the requirement.
Power and position are somewhat similar because with position comes power. Power can be called as the capacity or the ability to direct or influence the other persons behavior.
Leadership and power can work hand in hand when they walk with the purpose of serving someones good. There must not be the presence of any form of ulterior motives like glory, honor, pride, selfishness etc. (Faulhaber, 2008)
One such example happened when I was working with an MNC as an executive many years ago. My manager had given me some files to audit one day. Although it was his work but he had given the task because he was busy that day. Upon audit I found out that he made produced some fake bills in the name of the company. When I went up to him and asked him he threatened me for dire consequences if I report it to the manager. A few days later he himself came up to me and began explaining, that all the bills that he had seen were not wrong but there were some miscalculations from my end. I did not respond back to him as I thought that I must cross check from my end first. Upon checking I understood that yes they were not fake bills. I learnt that it is important to convey your ideas and your thinking in the right manner for the fear of being misconstrued. (WESTERN, 2013).
