INDS 340 Human Agency and Interior Spaces
To see the oral version of the discussion-based guidelines at the end of the Elmer Ave. field trip, see: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z9_B4MhL0Z8&feature=youtu.be. Many thanks to Saud, who recorded and made available the discussion at the end of the Elmer Ave. field trip!
Your Presentations should include MLA formatting of references/works cited entries throughout and a “Works Cited” slide at the end of your presentation.
Total Presentation Time: 10 minutes. Roughly, 8 minutes presentation; 2 minutes leading discussion
Question that frames your presentation objective: What do the spaces of the “neighborhood of the future” look like?
Presentation Materials/Research Input
Sensory Mapping of Elmer Ave & Elmer Paseo project (artifact from your experience of the site); photos, video, sketches, notes, direct observations you recorded on site; ocean images, readings references, concepts and terms from reading: resilience, symbiont/symbiotic relations, coral reef species’ design of space, biodiversity, 3-dimensional space/design, “community” and community-as-proxemics, neighborhood; presentation discussion at Elmer Ave., discussion with resident and neighborhood historian Eddie Hernandez on his experience of both Elmer Avenue and the Elmer Avenue design project, etc.
Organization
A three-movement way to organize your approach for this presentation:
I. Frame carefully your presentation through concepts/language we’ve been discussing in class: value-action gap, proxemics, techno-optimism, resilience and resilience-as-proxemic relation, symbiont, symbiosis, biodiversity, interior/exterior, retrofitting, liminal space/experience, community, 3-dimensional experience and design, etc. If this step is missing, your presentation is not complete.
Where in a continuum between “retrofitting of space” and the “neighborhood of the future” does your thinking/presentation find its context?
II. Build across this conceptual framework outlined above by comparing ocean-based proxemics and land-based/human proxemics. Draw comparisons across concepts in I. above.
What are you seeing across the “experimental” neighborhood of Elmer Avenue’s physical and social re-definitions and redesign of space as “neighborhood?” interior/exterior redesign? Hall’s intimate/personal/social/public space? Eddie Hernandez, Elmer Ave. resident, was very articulate about his experience of the relations among proxemics (without ever using the word “proxemics”), human agency, and “community.” Map-out your group’s interpretation of your experience on site with examples across the spaces at Elmer Ave. and Elmer Paseo. Map this across ocean proxemics also. How might “coral reefs,” and ocean strategies of “resilience” more generally, enable you to reconceive human design and experience of interior/exterior and other dynamics of human agency in and through space? What are the implications of your design on “community?”
III. What does the future of human space in neighborhoods looks like? Create a representation of that experience by offering a “future-oriented” design of the space of “the neighborhood” (either of “retrofitting” or of space more creatively conceived). However you orient your approach to this visualization, support your design approach and space with reference to the concepts and visuals you’ve drawn upon in (I.) and (II.) above (proxemics and other key terms, sensory and spatial mapping, photos/video, sketches, modelling, etc.). Orient your audience in your space(s) by using the terms and concepts we’ve been developing in class. Walk us through to close your presentation.
