Instruction
Living 24 hours without leisure
(Due on 10/30)
Introduction
What do you do in your discretionary time? There are a variety of activities in which you engage to entertain yourself during this time such as texting to your friends, watching television/dramas/movies, playing video games, drinking a cup of coffee, driving for pleasure, visiting your friends' houses, etc.
Each of these activities is considered a type of leisure you have pursued intentionally or unconsciously. Have you thought about people who have limited opportunities or are deprived of personal leisure in their living? These may include, but are not limited to: people with severe disabilities, people in refugee camps, or even possibly your friends, family members, or close neighbors. The purpose of this assignment is to provide you with an opportunity to experience daily living of those people who cannot pursue their own leisure life.
Assignment Instructions
First, make a list of all activities for enjoyment in which you have engaged during your discretionary time. These activities may exclude your schoolwork, job related activities, and hygiene activities. Second, select one specific day in advance, and spend 24 hours without engaging in all the activities you have listed. Finally, write a journal (1-2 pages, single space) describing your experience living without leisure; explain how you feel about your experience and what you have learned from this experience.
This assignment looks very simple, but it may not be as easy to complete as you think. Let us discuss about your experiences in class as well.
