Instruction
Answer the specific questions asked. Please number your answers to correspond to the questions. (You do not need two rewrite the questions here in your write-up; simply number them.) The case questions are posted in Canvas in the module for Week 9, Class Materials, Corporate Strategy, Diversification and the Multi-Business Economy.
Answer the questions as briefly as you can. If you can answer the question in one sentence, great. (It usually takes me 3-4). If the question asks you to make an interpretation or recommendation, then you may need to develop your answer at more length and this may require one or more paragraphs. In any case, be as brief as you can while still answering the question fully.
Use bullet points! If the case questions ask you to summarize LVMH's strategy, and that strategy is made up of 3 parts, use three bullet points to summarize it. Make each point as brief as possible.
Use evidence (reasons, data) to support your answers. Cite only evidence needed to support your points directly.
Draw diagrams or create spreadsheets either as asked in the questions or as you think will best support the points you make. Use these to demonstrate key concepts or tools introduced in the text and/ or class. Please either include these in the text or upload these drawings, spreadsheets or other analyses as part of your write-ups. The LVMH case requires four diagrams (Weighted Industry Attractiveness, Weighted Competitive Strength, Nine-Cell Industry Attractiveness Competitive Strength Matrix, and Cross-Business Strategic Fit) and 4 financial spreadsheet analyses. Model diagrams and explanations for them can be found on pages 238-39, 240-41, 241-2 and 242-43 of the text. Key financial ratios are listed in the case questions along with references to pages in the text where you will find explanations for how to calculate them. Please include these in or with the text of your write-ups.
Remember: we all know the story in the case. You may refer to companies or phenomena as simply "LVMH's market share of XYZ%," for example. You don't have to explain that market share if you pulled it from the text. Please explain only material that you add to the text, such as models that you apply, calculations that you make or financial analyses that you carry out.
