This assignment presents you with an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of Descartes’s philosophy by comparing his skepticism with that implicit in the Matrix. Write a two-page essay in which you answer each of the following questions: 1) How does the Matrix reaffirm the dream doubt put forward by Descartes in his first meditation? 2) How is it that Descartes’s dream doubt leads to the conclusion that I am essentially a thinking thing, while the kind of doubt engendered by the Matrix does not? (Recall that if I am essentially a thinking thing, then I do not need a body to exist.) 3) At the very end of his sixth meditation, Descartes explains why the dream doubt is not compelling. How do his reasons for this conclusion affect Neo’s chances of gaining knowledge of reality while he is still in the Matrix?
