I thought it was great how the author made the characters come off ignorant by them saying educated people where boring and the men hoped there were still fools in the world so it would be interesting. If the women in this story had not been from wealthy families do you think they would feel the same about the name Earnest?

  • Ideally, you don't need to tell people they illiterate or rather less educated. You just need to communicate through dialogues and from there based on responses assess their education. In that retrorespect I feel the author did an appropriate idea here. Nevertheless on the issue of wealthy family, i believe it would have brought a different meaning had it been represented for instance if not wealthy. It would have changed the meaning & theme of the play hence would have a different meaning. What do you think???
