Instruction
Must write two papers
1.) • The muckraking journalists were essential in analyzing the critical issues of the late nineteenth-century and ushering in the great period of Progressive reform. This week’s discussion board topic is for each student to briefly assess one such critical issue. Please choose one current newspaper article from this week (9/18- 9/24) about some current issue in the US that was also of great importance during the Progressive Era (see lecture notes VII), such as immigration, regulation of big business, labor unions, farmers, etc. Then, analyze its coverage by the media in a brief, original, well-written posting of about 10-20 sentences. In other words, this should summarize the article and then analyze how the issue is being presented by the media-- is it objective/slanted, is it sensationalized, etc.? Use some concrete examples from the article to illustrate why you feel the way that you do. In addition, be sure to cut and paste the web address for the article at the end of the posting.
Some very useful on-line resources include: New York Times (http://www.nytimes.com), Boston Globe (http://www.boston.com/), Providence Journal (http://www.projo.com/), and Washington Post (http://www.washingtonpost.com/).
2.)• As we focus on the worst economic disaster in world history, this week’s discussion topic is for each student to find one current article from an on-line media website involving the US economy. Please choose one current newspaper article from this week (10/16- 10/22) about some aspect of the American economy such as negotiations between President Trump and Congress over taxes, the release of new unemployment numbers, a report about the housing market, etc. Then, please post a brief, well-written posting in your own words of about 10-20 sentences, which summarizes the article and how the article/issue relates to some aspect of this week’s lecture notes. Use some concrete examples from the article and notes to illustrate why you feel the way that you do. In addition, be sure to cut and paste the web address for the article at the end of the posting.
