Overview: The essay introduces you to the semester topic of information technology, tackling with the idea of surveillance in our contemporary world. You will read multiple articles which refer to the benefits or the drawbacks of surveillance and compare their arguments. You will learn how to summarize, quote, and paraphrase effectively. You will present accurately the two types of opinions related to surveillance and discuss which is more effective. Essay: 1. Summarize Thomas Lee’s “Too Much Privacy is a Health Hazard” and another article of your choice from the following list: Diffie and Landau’s “Privacy: Protections and Threats,” Herbert’s “What Privacy Rights?” or Shenk’s “Surveillance Society.” 2. Analyze their distinct views. 3. Explain which article, in your opinion, is more persuasive. 4. Take a stand. Reflection: After you write and revise your paper, you will include in the final folder a short reflection on the difficulty of the essay. You will also discuss whether or not you are comfortable with the topic of information technology. Audience: Your instructor. Requirements: • Summaries should be accurate, concise, and focused on their distinct views. • Your analysis of their views should be objective and clear. It should demonstrate that you understand the articles and their key terms. • Your paper should make a clear and convincing case as you explain which article you find more persuasive and you pick a side. • Your paper must paraphrase and integrate the articles well. It must follow the MLA-style citation conventions. • The final draft should use the correct MLA format, and it should contain at least 900 words. The suggested length should comprise between 1000 and 1200 words. • We will review the first draft in class, so it is important to bring 3 hard copies to class on January 26. The first draft must contain double spaced pages, using 1 inch margins and twelve-point Times New Roman font. Failure to deliver it electronically and bring it to class on the due dates will result in a ten point deduction from your grade. • The final draft of the essay must not contain the errors reviewed in class. Remember that the peer-review is a learning experience. • The final draft must use 1 inch margins and twelve-point Times New Roman font, and it must be submitted both electronically and in print in a manila folder. Late submission will be deducted ten points per day. In the manila folder you should have: 1. All Rough Drafts (with comments from peers) 2. Final draft 3. Reflection
