Personal Response Essay:Our first formal essay asks you to respond to our text using MLA format. This essay should be a significant conversation (multi-paragraph essay). The typical response essay is likely to be between 3-5 pages in length, double-spaced text. The works cited page is NOT part of that total. As you have been reading and skimming through our text On Being Different, locate a topic or passage(s) that piques your interest. For example, maybe the fact that our authors state, “Culture is learned” has meaning for you.Respond to the passage(s) you have selected. What do you think the author means by this? What meaning does it have for you? Are there examples in your experience or via other sources that help develop this topic for you? Use critical thinking/opinion or any appropriate technique to develop your written conversation. You may also include what topics you may be eager to discuss in upcoming lectures. Make sure to use quotation marks when citing and use parenthetical reference when citing in text sources. NOTE: It is clear that some of our students may be international students, and the topic of American multiculturalism may take more effort to understand. Feel free to use comparison to your own culture, if you like, in order to explain your understanding of the text. Do not be afraid if you think your interpretations may be incorrect. The purpose of this essay is to get students to warm up to the text, our topic, and use of your opinion on some of the issues that may be introduced in the text or class. The purpose is also to solidify the MLA format and using text to support your views. Because your instructor has asked for your personal response, it is acceptable (this time) to write this essay in the first-person point of view.
